Margareth was one of the first nurses enrolled in Indonesia’s new oncology nurse specialist training programme. She is already looking forward to the difference her new expertise can make for cancer patients.

My full name is Margareth Virgini Lasut.

But my family and friends call me Genie. I am 32 years old, and I’m married to a wonderful husband. I come from North Sulawesi, one of the provinces in Indonesia. I don’t really like traveling, so in my free time, I prefer to spend it with my family at home.
Since my childhood, I’ve always been interested in nursing — because my mom is a nurse. I grew up watching her use her talent and knowledge in the field of nursing to help others. Since I was a child, it has been my dream to become a nurse, and up until now,
[00:57]
I still feel that this is the right career for me. I’ve never felt bored at work. Every day I gain new experiences by meeting new people with diverse and interesting personalities.
At first, I thought that my patients would learn from me — but then I realized that I was the one learning from them. I’ve learned so many important things in life from my patients, such as the importance of family and how to maintain hope and faith during difficult times.
This program was truly an answer to all my prayers,
[01:34]
because it allows me to study at one of the best universities in Indonesia. And I believe this program will bring great benefits to the cancer community in North Sulawesi.
In North Sulawesi, where I work, there are currently no graduates specializing in oncology nursing. In fact, every year the number of cancer patients coming in for treatment continues to increase. With graduates of oncology nursing specialists, we hope to further strengthen nursing care for cancer patients.
And I hope that I will also be able to
[02:11]
share my knowledge with other nurses, so that cancer services in North Sulawesi can become even better.
