Inside Roche R&D: Translating science into breakthroughs

At Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED), our scientists combine advanced biological insights with big data to solve healthcare’s most complex challenges. By bridging early discovery and clinical application, we aim to bring transformative therapies to the patients who need them most.

Uncovering the unknown at Roche pRED

At Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED), we focus our efforts where the medical need is greatest and the biological answers are hard to find. We don't shy away from healthcare's steepest hurdles. Instead, we focus our discovery and development efforts on conditions that carry high societal and human burdens.

By bridging groundbreaking science, computational AI, and data, our multidisciplinary teams work across cardiovascular & metabolism, immunology & inflammatory diseases, infectious diseases, neuroscience & rare diseases, oncology & hematology, and ophthalmology. Across these core therapeutic areas, we aim to intercept disease early, break long-standing efficacy ceilings, and deliver sustained, life-changing benefits for patients worldwide.

Our holistic ophthalmology vision: from prevention to sight restoration

Progressive eye conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy, place a profound burden on patients, families, and healthcare systems worldwide. At Roche, our scientists are pioneering a data-driven, patient-centred approach to eye care that addresses every stage of disease progression. By combining cellular-level retinal imaging, artificial intelligence, AI and novel therapeutic modalities, our teams aim to move beyond simply halting visual decline, striving to restore sight and give patients back their independence.

In this video series, we invite you to take a look inside Roche R&D to see how our teams are fusing data, technology, and clinical research to redefine retina care. Watch the videos below to hear directly from our R&D team about our latest breakthroughs.

Advancements in retinal imaging have allowed us to see the back of the eye really at cell level, allowing us to make real advancements in the field.

Clinical Research Fellow

I think the thing that inspires me most about doing science is that we are constantly moving into the unknown... pushing boundaries all the time.

Rachael Harlow

Clinical Research Fellow

In my work, I need to work together with data scientists, AI experts, and statisticians. At Roche, I can work together with a very strong team to do all the work that I want to do.

Siqing Yu

Principal Scientist

My hope for the future is that we can go from simply halting disease progression to truly transformative restoration of vision, enabling patients to reconnect with the world around them.

Dennis Eickelbeck

Senior Scientist

What is really great help if you have some detective skills, because you really have to dig through your data to find connections between different tiny details for your patients.

Senior Principal Scientist

Working at pRED: driven by curiosity, purpose, and patient impact

What does it take to work at the forefront of pharmaceutical innovation? At Roche pRED, our science is fueled by relentless curiosity, collaborative problem-solving, and an urgent mandate to treat diseases where options remain severely limited. By uniting clinicians, data scientists, statisticians, and AI experts, our teams navigate uncharted biology, take bold risks, and work toward one ultimate goal: transforming and saving lives.

Explore the stories below to hear our researchers share what inspires their daily work, from deciphering complex cell biology to turning breakthrough discoveries into real hope for patients.

Together we can push science and the work of Roche to bring medicines to patients a little bit further forward each and every day... Other days, you get to go home knowing that huge steps have been made.

Matthew May

Senior Patient Partnership Director

The first spark for science came from my grandfather, who was a plant geneticist... That was my first contact with science, and since that time, I didn't move away from it.

Mantian Wang

Senior Scientist

The one thing that inspires me the most about doing science is going into something that nobody has discovered before, knowing that one day it might change the life of patients for the better.

Marco Künzli

Senior Scientist

What inspires me about science is that it's something where I can have an impact... and being part of this discovery journey for a potential drug is really what motivates me.
