Welcome to Roche Basel

Basel is where Roche’s story began. Roche was founded in Basel, Switzerland in 1896 as one of the first companies specifically set up to manufacture scientifically researched pharmaceuticals. The founder Fritz Hoffmann witnessed the devastating cholera outbreak in Hamburg and believed there had to be a better way - one that would bring quality healthcare to everyone, everywhere.

From heritage to innovation

For more than 125 years, Roche has grown into one of the world’s leading healthcare companies. Our scientists, engineers, and partners work together across pharmaceuticals and diagnostics to advance the practice of medicine and improve outcomes for patients everywhere.

Since our founding, our purpose has been “Doing now what patients need next.”

Today, Basel remains at the heart of Roche’s global operations. The city’s rich tradition of science, culture, and architecture continues to inspire innovation and drive the next generation of medical breakthroughs.
