Systems Biology is the attempt to integrate complex biological data into models that take the relevant interactions between the components of a living system – genes, receptors, transcription factors, enzymes and cytokines, for example - into account. These models are analyzed computationally to understand and predict the behavior of the living system under study. Key questions addressed include the temporal response to stimuli or stressors, the switch-like determination of cell fate during developmental processes, and the interplay of different cell types and organs in complex human diseases. In biology, the whole is more than the sum of its parts.
