Chemical Biology

Chemical Biology comprises a range of activities where chemistry is deployed to create insight into biological processes at the molecular level. This includes the design of tool compounds intended for the identification of new targets, the validation of target hypotheses or the elucidation of biological pathways. In chemical biology, specialized forms of rational design and screening are employed, for example chemical genomics – which analyzes the function of gene families using chemical substances. Biophysical screening methods – which measure the binding of a substance to a protein target - are also used in chemical biology, as they can be deployed before the function of a protein is known or a functional assay has been developed.
