Roche is honored with the Gold Medical Design Excellence Award and Red Dot Design Award for the cobas b 123 POC system. The award ceremonies were held in New York in June for the Medical Design Excellence Award and in Essen, Germany in July for the Red Dot Design Award. Suitable for fast and accurate blood gas and electrolyte testing, the cobas b 123 POC system enables health care professionals with unmet needs for ease of use and simple consumables handling, an ideal solution.
Recognizing the latest contributions and advances in the design of medical products, the juries evaluated the cobas b 123 POC system on the basis of industrial design and engineering features, and more importantly for improving healthcare delivery and enhancing medical practice to facilitate better patient outcomes. A comprehensive review of the entries by impartial and multi-disciplinary panels of third-party jurors has shown that the cobas b 123 POC system achieved outstanding levels in vital parameter testing accuracy and unrivalled ease of use at the point of care.
Unmet ease of use at the point of care
Before developing their latest blood gas analyzer, Roche’s engineering and design teams put significant resources into early market evaluation with focus groups in order to properly meet the evolving demands of end users. Easy consumables handling, quick set-up processes and a straightforward user interface led to the creation of a truly point of care blood gas analyzer combining elements of usability and time saving, without the challenges of traditional maintenance. “Suitable for both, the laboratory and the point-of-care setting, the cobas b 123 POC system addresses the developing healthcare professional needs in the laboratory and at the patient’s bedside, which has been recognized with these prestigious product design awards”, stated Euan Cameron, International Product Manager at Roche Professional Diagnostics.
Introducing industry firsts
At the heart of the cobas b 123 POC system are the sensor, Auto QC pack and the novel fluid pack with reagent stability of up to 42 days, which requires no refrigeration. From a usability point of view, the consumables offer healthcare professionals an easy solution when running their blood gas analyzer, including a central, enclosed sample port which reduces the biohazard risk when handling blood samples. After a consumable has expired, healthcare professionals simply dispose the pack from the analyzer without any risk of leakage or exposure to biohazard materials. While the smart chip technology on each consumable allows a quick and simple transfer of consumables between analyzers, meaning less test wastage. While the lit sample port makes it even easier to interchange consumables and run samples in darkened patient room environments.
Wireless connectivity for remote management
Users have seamless connectivity to the IT environment either wirelessly or via a network port, using the powerful Roche POC IT management systems. This connectivity feature enables healthcare professionals to remotely monitor and manage patient data, as well as analyzer performance, via the cobas bgelink software, cobas IT1000 application and cobas e-services.
About 80 Roche employees were involved in the research and development process of the award winning cobas b 123 POC system, currently approved and commercially available in EMEA, APAC and LATAM regions.
