Within Roche’s Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED), Neuroscience & Rare Diseases represents a major focus area where we are committed to realizing our long-term vision of changing lives of patients with severe brain disorders. Our preclinical research and early clinical development activities center around large and rare indications within the four major pillars of neurodevelopmental disorders, movement disorders, dementias, and multiple sclerosis. To achieve our goals, Roche pRED Neuroscience & Rare Diseases is currently undergoing a major and exciting recruitment effort for a large number of new positions including a Discovery Scientist in Neurotechnology  within the Department of Research. All positions are based in Basel, Switzerland.

The position:

  • You design and perform experimental studies to drive the understanding and further improvement of brain delivery at a molecular level.

  • You help to develop techniques to identify therapeutic biologic candidates with enhanced ability to cross the BBB.

  • You are an integral part of a multidisciplinary brain targeting team, and generate and apply technologies to deliver therapeutic drug candidates and genomic medicine over the BBB.

  • You will develop and run academic collaborations as necessary to evaluate current techniques for BBB penetration and other methods to increase brain exposure of biologics.

  • You collaborate within a strong applied science atmosphere and have access to state-of-the art infrastructure and possibility to invest in new infrastructure as needed.

  • You design and perform lab work and propose innovative solutions.

The Neurotechnology team is situated in a stimulating, diverse international research environment, at the cross over between academic research and industry.  This position is an exciting opportunity to combine cutting edge, translational neurovascular research with next generation sequencing and mass spectrometry in a highly collaborative matrix of skilled scientists.

Who your are:

PhD in neurobiology or similar discipline and you have a minimum of 5 years lab experience in the fields of neurological diseases, protein engineering, neurovascular biology and pathophysiology, or a combination tereof

You are solution-orientated with a hand-on attitude and have a keen interest in bringing invention to practice and patients. You have a proven record of accomplishment in the field of brain drug delivery and 1st or last author publications in relevant fields of neurovascular biology or receptor-mediated transcytosis.

An extensive knowledge of, and preferably practical experience with cellular or animal models and techniques to deliver large-molecule therapeutics into the brain would be a plus.

  • Proven productivity based on high quality 1st or last author publications is essential

  • A profound understanding of the neurovascular unit is an absolute requirement

  • An extensive knowledge of brain endothelial surface proteins is a core requirement

  • A background in neuroscience is highly desirable for this position

  • Applied experience in proteomics and/or transcriptomic technologies is a plus

  • Hands-on expertise in brain targeting and/or drug delivery technologies is a big plus

  • Practical experience with receptor-mediated transcytosis is an advantage

  • Ability to do animal work with rodents and work under BSL2 conditions

  • Interest in target discovery and drug development

  • Function well in a team-oriented research environment
