Roche Diagnostics’ Global Customer Experience and Solution Design Team (CXSD team) is looking for a Principal Industrial Designer to expand and strengthen our trusted and established industrial design capabilities. This is a key role to further develop the Design languages of the different product categories/families and boost our sustainable vision. This is also a great opportunity to shape and enable excellent User Experience in a medical domain and harmonizing Customer Experience across the entire diagnostics portfolio. 

In this role, you’ll be part of an international group of designers who contribute with hardware and software design expertise on teams making the best lab equipment possible, getting diagnoses to doctors and patients with speed and accuracy. These diagnostics machines are used for testing COVID, cancer, genetic disorders and more. 

In this role, you’ll spend time collaborating with a cross-functional team (external agencies, designers, front-end and mechanical engineers and business partners) understanding their needs and problems, helping to implement and evolve our well established visual, communicative, industrial design standards (including surface, color and material), building comprehensive accessibility standards into our workflows, and defining guidelines and best practices that will inform how teams design and build products. You will be working on projects as an Industrial and UX designer. You will also act as a proxy of the industrial design leads and be able to coach, train and answer any questions from the organization and external suppliers around the industrial design topic.

You will also mentor junior designers, upskill teammates and constantly learn and grow yourself.

What you will do 

  • Support and guidance of multiple project teams in questions of industrial design, sustainability and UX to ensure a common look and feel and adherence to the standards of our products and platforms.

  • Generate concepts by drawing, using 2D and 3D tools to visualise solutions and support engineers and external partners.

  • Support, brief, supervise and guide multiple design agencies and coordination between project teams and agencies.

  • Elaboration of hardware and interaction design concepts together with customer and business representatives, usability engineers and development teams.

  • Support project teams to implement UX (visual, interaction and industrial) design guidelines; contribution to continuous advancement of the design language.

  • Alignment of industrial design guidelines across departments, sites, and external vendors.

  • Planning and execution of usability evaluations on hardware and software mockups incl. creation of hardware mockups and assessment of ergonomic factors.

  • Education and coaching of other professionals in the area.

  • Management of multiple stakeholders, promotion and strategic development of the UX/CX discipline within the department and the division.

  • Proxy the Industrial Design Leads and moderate in rotation the Industrial Design team exchange meeting

  • To be successful in this role, you bring your creativity along with a Bachelor/Master in Industrial Design or other comparable profession. 

  • Additionally: Education in Human Computer Interaction Design, Human Factors or comparable education

  • Profound experience in Industrial Design, UX and design management and design quality incl. common manufacturing processes and color & material expertise

  • Experience in developing sustainable products

  • Strong abilities in user and customer experience design, usability, interaction design and prototyping for digital and physical products/solutions

  • Strong sketching abilities

  • Able to build models

  • Strong abilities in planning, preparing, moderating and analysing (remote) workshops 

  • Strong communication (oral and writing), analytical, design skills and attention to the details

  • You are an empathic interdisciplinary collaborator, skilled at blending different perspectives in the pursuit of a mission

  • You build positive relationships across different areas and are an excellent communicator and storyteller to communicate ideas, solutions and deliverables effectively and persuasively.

  • Well-versed in interacting with mechanical engineers

  • Experience with guiding more junior designers

  • Fluent in English, plus other languages always a plus

  • A solid expertise in Solidworks and Keyshot are a strong plus as 2D tools (Adobe CC, figma, etc)

  • Proven track record of results providing design excellence, delivering solutions to market and leading design teams in a controlled development process with requirements as done in the healthcare and medical device industry or another highly regulated industry (with ownership of key deliverables) are a plus.
