Job Description:

The Early Clinical Development (ECD) Oncology group at Genentech is seeking a talented Physician Scientist to lead oncology studies focused on targeting cancer signalling pathways The scope of ECD activities encompasses first-in-human trials through proof-of-concept studies for promising novel agents against a variety of targets and cancers, with a strong focus on mechanism-based biomarkers.

ECD Oncology oversees a broad hematology and oncology portfolio and drives development from first-in-human studies through proof-of-concept and decision-making regarding initial pivotal studies. The Medical Director will provide clinical leadership to a number of cross-functional teams to drive the design, implementation, monitoring, analysis, and reporting of studies conducted within one or more programs. They will also participate in developing the long-range strategic plans for the molecule program(s). This individual will be responsible for communicating with external experts and investigators. Additional responsibilities involve direct interactions with the Genentech Research group, the Oncology Biomarker Development group, and assessment of in-licensing opportunities.

Designing and conducting efficient, interpretable trials that address high priority questions in clinical hematology and oncology is challenging and exciting work that is supported by Genentech’s outstanding commitment and leadership in basic, translational, and clinical cancer research, and vibrant patient-oriented culture.


M.D. with board certification, or eligibility, in Oncology, Hematology, Hematology/Oncology, or related specialty; M.D./Ph.D. a plus

Experience in laboratory-based cancer research or hematology, oncology clinical trials is preferred, either within an academic environment or within the pharmaceutical industry

Desire and ability to effectively participate within multi-disciplinary teams

Ability to interact effectively with external experts and investigators
