The Corporate Newsroom manager is responsible for discovering and sharing the inspiring untold stories of the science, patients and people of Genentech, and our impact on society. This role, which reports to the Editor-in-Chief of External Publishing functions as roving reporter for Genentech who builds relationships, searches for great story ideas, interviews people throughout the organization to mine and develop story content, and packages and pitches stories to media or for use on external and internal paid / owned channels. This role will engage with employees at all levels of the company, including internal business partners and stakeholders in the Officer and C-Suite communities. It’s an intense, fast-paced and interesting role within a fun, experienced and high-energy team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Acts as an in-house roving reporter for Genentech. 

  • Builds relationships, searches for great story ideas, interviews people throughout the organization to mine and develop story content, and packages and pitches stories to media or for use on paid / owned channels.

  • Develops and maintains strong media relationships.

  • Supports and collaborates closely with appropriate external communications team members to ensure strategic alignment.

  • Secures big picture / feature story opportunities with top-tier media that are supportive of Genentech’s overarching corporate brand strategy.

  • Serves as in-house media trainer for senior executives and other company spokespeople.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or other relevant field

Experience

  • 5+ years of journalism or deep media relations and writing experience and expertise

  • Experience covering science and healthcare preferred

To be successful the Manager must have:

  • Exceptional writing, editing and visual story-telling skills 

  • Thorough knowledge of (or willingness to learn and maintain knowledge of) Genentech's medicines, pipeline and approach to disease, as well as comfort with scientific topics

  • An understanding of (or willingness to learn and maintain knowledge of) important business topics including industry trends, clinical trial design, drug development, regulatory decision-making and public policy issues

  • Video production management experience and/or experience guiding the production of visual assets

  • Excellent judgement and a keen sense of what is timely, culturally relevant and makes a great story

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a desire to build and nurture relationships 

  • Ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization, including senior leaders; and work cross-functionally across multiple teams

  • Ability to meet deadlines, work within budgets and balance many priorities

  • Comfortable in a fast-moving and agile environment where flexibility is key

  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills

  • High integrity and discretion to manage confidential information

  • A deep interest in and passion for Genentech’s mission of pursuing groundbreaking science to discover and develop breakthrough medicines for people facing serious diseases.
