Treffen Sie Daphne, Head of Pharma Financials bei Roche

Tell us a bit about yourself!

My name is Daphne and I was born and raised in Stuttgart, Germany. After my Masters studies in Business Administration with a focus in Engineering and Finance, I joined Roche in Switzerland as a Global Finance Management trainee. Since then, I have worked in different roles within Roche Finance - in Diagnostics, Pharma, and in February this year, I started working within Group Finance. My jobs at Roche have taken me to the US, Slovenia, Germany and Australia, where I got to know and enjoyed different cultures and lifestyles. At the beginning of this year, I moved to Basel, Switzerland. In Basel, I much enjoy the close proximity of everything – no matter where you go, you can get there within about 15 min – without a car. Moreover, living in the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland offers almost never-ending opportunities for the weekend, which I have yet to explore.

In which Roche location are you currently working and what can you tell us about that location as a work environment?

Currently, I am working in Group Finance in Basel. Working at the Roche headquarters with over 10,000 employees is an amazing opportunity. The site offers various services to the employees and the work environment is really international. Working with colleagues from different countries as well as different work and cultural backgrounds I find exciting, enriching and fun. People are encouraged to network and collaborate, and so it is no surprise that lunch meetings are booked long in advance.

Why did you decide to join Roche and why this location?

When I initially joined Roche 8 years ago, key motivators for me were the possibility to contribute to a better life for patients as well as the culture at Roche. I much appreciate the values and the people focus. What brought me to Basel? Having spent 8 years abroad in commercial roles, my goal was to work in a global role at some stage and to get to know the headquarters’ perspective as well as the big picture Finance view.

What is your current position at Roche?

I am leading the Pharma Financials Management Information team within Group Finance. One of our key responsibilities is to manage the Pharma Division’s closing process and provide management with high-quality, meaningful insights on the financials and business. The Pharma Division consists of Roche Pharma, Foundation Medicine and Chugai. My team and I work closely together with various headquarters and global functions to gain insights and be up to date regarding factors impacting the division’s development. We also have the lead for operational accounting matters for the division, ensuring proper governance and controls. What I like a lot about my job is that it gives me comprehensive insights into the financials of the Pharma Division, as well as a high-level overview for the Group. Furthermore, the scope of topics I get involved in is very broad, e.g. financial analysis, process and system re-designs, accounting topics, etc.

How would you describe Roche as an employer?

My experience is that Roche is very people-focused and provides a wide range of services and opportunities to employees, e.g. with regard to work flexibility, career development, fitness, etc. I had this experience at every Roche location I have worked at so far. In particular, I find the Roche culture very open and supportive. I much appreciate the “open door policy”, meaning you can reach out to anyone in the organisation. Furthermore, I think people development is a true priority for leaders, be it with regard to time investment in coaching or mentoring, or the willingness to give people stretch assignments. Personally, having the opportunity to continue to learn and work internationally is something I value a lot.

How would you describe the people working here?

People are driven by a sense of purpose, something that unites employees. People are also very motivated, which makes it an inspiring work environment. There is a high level of collaboration between colleagues from different teams, which I enjoy a lot. In Finance, I feel like I am part of a global finance community – not only is it great to know people around the globe you can reach out to for help on business topics, you can also get to know people and different roles, and have fun together, too.

What would you advise job seekers who want to join us?

The Roche culture, with its people focus and specific values, is very unique. Familiarise yourself with this culture to get a first feel for it, and of course, also learn about what Roche does, e.g. by watching videos on our YouTube channel and visiting careers.roche.ch.
