Treffen Sie Claudia, International Competitive Intelligence Manager, Breast Cancer at Roche

basel marketing sales switzerland

Hi, my name is…

...Claudia. I am originally from Colombia but was living in London before moving to Switzerland. I moved to the UK to learn English and then stayed to pursue my studies. I have a BSc in Molecular Biology & Genetics from Royal Holloway University and a PhD in Cancer Biology from King’s College London. When I finished my PhD, I worked in early phase clinical trials and this really made me passionate about drug development. It was from these early stages that I became very interested in what it takes to bring a drug to market, and working closer to the pharmaceutical industry became a focus for my career progression.

My typical day at work is…

As a Competitive Intelligence Manager in Breast Cancer in the Strategic Insights & Analysis Department, days are never monotonous. I support teams across the organization; from brand teams, to pipeline, to other cross-functional groups and affiliates. While the needs from every group differ, my ultimate goal is to always act as a strategic partner delivering insight and analyses on the competitive environment. Through this, I help to ensure that teams are kept informed of relevant and up-to-date competitive insights, and to gain alignment on competitor assumptions, thus enabling well-informed strategic decisions that impact our business. One important component of this is the continuous collection of Competitive Intelligence (CI) from both internal and external sources, and synthesizing the information in the most relevant manner for the various stakeholders. Attending medical conferences are key for this task, as is the management of external vendors who support ongoing CI activities.

The location I am working at is…

I am based in Basel, more specifically in Building 1, Roche’s newest building and the highest office building in Switzerland. I live right in the center of the city, only a 10-minute walk to the office, which is very convenient. Building 1 is a special place, with great views of the city, a friendly atmosphere, and plenty of space to connect with colleagues casually over lunch or coffee. We are very lucky to be in such a beautiful city and international environment. Basel is packed with culture and events throughout the year. Also being located within easy reach of Germany, France and of course the Alps makes winters here quite unique.

My work helps Roche to …

My Competitive Intelligence work guides and supports strategic decision-making in what is a very complex and competitive environment. At Roche, our aim is for every person who is in need of our products to have access and benefit from them. In this context, my work helps to ensure that the science we develop reaches those who need these products in the most effective way, helping Roche make a difference to patients’ lives.

Roche as an employer is…

A friendly environment to work in, very diverse, and one in which learning from your teams and across functions is in the company’s interest. There are plenty of training and development opportunities, and you pretty much own your career progression. The company’s core values as a science-driven organization are maintained through everything that we do, and really foster an attitude of entrepreneurship and open collaboration. Roche is very willing to attract talent from all around the world and provided great support to make my relocation to Switzerland as smooth as possible.

In the Strategic Insights & Analysis Department we are looking for people who…

…are passionate, with excellent analytical, oral and written communication skills. A robust knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and a solid scientific background are also essential. You can find the open positions within the Strategic Insights & Analysis Department here.

What advice would you give a new colleague joining your department?

Network and organize face-to-face meetings, either coffees or lunches, with peers and senior colleagues. A social and friendly approach is embedded in Roche’s culture and it’s the best way to get to know its people and the workings of your role and the organization.

How would you describe working at Roche in three words?

Fun, collaborative, stimulating
