Meet Andreas, International Strategic Insights Manager at Roche

Hi, my name is…

…Andreas, and I joined Roche as an International Strategic Insights Manager in October 2015. Born one of three brothers, I grew up close to the 2000-year-old city of Augsburg in Bavaria, Germany. I went on to study molecular biology at nearby Ulm University – where I met my wife while working as a barkeeper 12 years ago. Having finished my MSc in molecular biology, we decided to move to Heidelberg, where I earned my PhD in molecular virology (Hepatitis C). I made my entry into the life science industry by working for 2 years as a strategy consultant at a Munich-based consulting company. When the opportunity came up, I joined a large pharmaceutical company as (EMEA) Business Insights Manager in Infectious Diseases & Immunology. After spending 3 years there, we were thrilled by the chance to relocate to Basel for my new job in the global oncology team in October last year. Thus, we relocated to Allschwil in Basel-Land together with our 2 cats, and are now looking forward to the birth of our twins in October!

My typical day at work is…

…very diverse. The core part of my job is to serve as an internal consultant generating insights (e.g. through market research) and interpreting and leveraging these data to inform our product strategy and forecasts, and thus embed an external market point-of-view in the strategic direction. That said, a lot of my daily tasks are around analysing market data, developing recommendations, and presenting and discussing them with global and international cross-functional business teams. I am very passionate about making a difference by running projects that are relevant for many countries across the globe.

The location I am working at is…

…truly vibrant and international. I am very excited about being part of the global product strategy team with so many highly talented and motivated people from all around the globe – that’s very inspiring. Our department is based in the brand new Building 1 in Basel – Switzerland’s tallest building. Aside from being quite a fancy and state-of-the art workplace, the view from the 38th floor is just spectacular! My office space is located on the 9th floor, with lots of daylight, and I am based close to my business partners, which greatly facilitates collaboration. Basel offers a high quality of life; everything is within easy reach in the city, and you don’t have far to go for recreational activities in the mountains, or the beautiful lakes of Switzerland.

My work helps Roche to…

…bring our therapies to patients. The ultimate goal of my work within the Global Product Strategy team is to help come up with the ideal business strategy to increase access to healthcare. This involves having a deep understanding of patients, so that they receive the most suitable therapy on their disease journey.

Roche as an employer is…

…awesome! I love the constructive, respectful and democratic discussion culture at Roche. Although it is perhaps more time-consuming, consensus-driven decisions consider more angles than top-down decisions and tend to motivate the people involved and ensure their buy-in. Apart from that, Roche also fosters a self-driven and independent work style. Thus, Roche empowers employees to think out-of-the-box and to leverage their specific experience and skills to come up with the best-possible solution. Having a time-stamp system in place on the site, work-life balance is ensured even during busy times.

Last but not least, working at the headquarters of Roche offers a wealth of opportunity for future career development, both in the global and affiliate teams. Both Roche and individual teams organise a multitude of after-work activities such as drinks receptions, just going out in the evenings, or meeting on the weekends – Roche is a great place to find friends!

In the Global Product Strategy (GPS) Oncology team we are currently looking for two International Strategic Insights Managers, who share our vision to “Lead the Cure for Cancer”.

You can find the open positions within the Strategic Insights & Analysis Department here and here.

What can you say about career development at Roche?

I really appreciate the fact that Roche not only allows but expects you to think about which direction you want to develop into from very early on. Creating an individual development plan enables every employee to enter constructive discussions with their supervisor, to get their plans reviewed by leadership teams, and to see what skills will be required to achieve their goals. This is great - I have not experienced anything comparable at any other company so far.

How would you describe working at Roche in three words?

Inspiring, Scientific, Empowering
