They are the first impression a company gets of you. The curriculum vitae is particularly important. How you design it is up to you and that is a challenge for many. We talked to Selina Ballhaus, Talent Acquisition Expert at Roche in Mannheim - what is she looking for?
A classic or modern CV?
Selina advises: "My tip: make the design of the CV depend on the position and the company. Are you applying to marketing? Then be creative. But you won't go wrong with a classic layout. Also pay attention to the length. A resume should be meaningful and no more than two pages long. Keep it short! "We know that you attended elementary school. Strike that from your CV and save space," Selina adds. It's also important to give the CV a good structure. Break it down into key areas. Why are you the perfect candidate for the vacant position? This must be clear not only from the cover letter, but also from your CV. Try to "sell" yourself directly for the position.
Gaps are particularly noticeable when it comes to specifying the periods in the CV. But is the gap in the CV really as bad as is always claimed? Selina says: "Gaps are seen. In any case, be prepared for people to ask. Try to package the gap in a positive way and have good arguments ready. Authenticity is a good way to go here." Sideline jobs should definitely be stated to avoid gaps and explain.
The personal touch
"The resume should be complete and well structured. Make the CV chronological - I want to be able to see at first glance what your current professional situation is like," Selina explains. You will earn plus points from her if you add a personal touch to the CV: What are your interests? What do you do in your free time?
"A photo on your CV is not a must, I personally prefer it," Selina adds. Basically you should go for a professional photo. With Selfies with the dog, you might be able to convince your followers on Instagram, but not a recruiter. Of course, a photo is completely optional and has long since ceased to be a must.
Completeness and seriousness
Last but not least, it is important not to forget the date and the signature on the CV. Make sure to include a valid e-mail address and a phone number where you can be reached. Mausi90@web.de is not well received by the recruiter. Also important: make sure that you use the same time information.
The CV is there to show the company why you are the perfect candidate for the job. Sell yourself well and remain authentic at the same time. As a recruiter, I like to learn about you as a person, because it's also about how you fit into the team.
