The Importance of Interconnections
I have always been passionate about connecting with people and envisioned myself to be a part of an industry that prioritises this value. As an individual who is strongly focused on the people-related side of things, I believe that teamwork is one of the essential elements of my professional and personal development.
Connecting With People
It is important to understand that people are different and have different traits and skill sets. I am a firm believer that when we connect with people, we must extend empathy, engage in active listening, and apply a people-first approach, as this will lead to a deeper mutual understanding of individuals and teams.
I am also a passionate advocate of people-oriented leadership and engagement that can drive individuals forward with motivation, empathy and a clear understanding of who each person is and what they are capable of. This led me to study Management in university, in which HR was one of the main subjects that helped me to gain a deeper appreciation for connecting with people.
Developing My Passion
Driven by that aspiration, I have grown in a variety of HR roles for over fifteen years. Having helmed different roles in Talent Acquisition, Global Mobility and Relocation, Compensation, Benefits and Payroll, as well as related departments in other pharmaceutical and technology-based companies, my passion for HR has deepened.
Although it can sometimes be very challenging, I enjoy the culture in HR departments because of the learning experience that I continue to encounter with my fellow employees. I also discovered that motivation and positivity is key to organizational success. Self-reflection, being open-minded, and the desire to learn are attributes that will not go wrong based on my own personal experience.
A New Chapter Begins
A year ago, I joined Roche as a Team Leader for Compensation, Benefits and Payroll in China People Support Solution (PSS). In a high-speed developmental environment, I realised that it is crucial to focus on our employees to understand their needs and concerns so that we can generate a better workplace for everyone in the company.
Every day as I stepped into the Roche office in China, I spent some time reading our patients’ stories and photos on a wall dedicated to our purpose, and that reminded me - not only of the meaning behind what we work for but the impact we create in other people's lives. Roche is a pioneer in healthcare. The products we are developing are at the cutting-edge of innovation and transforming patients’ lives. This makes our day to day work full of meaning. At the same time, Roche maintains strong corporate values which are integrity, passion and courage. These values are being demonstrated consistently and provide a direction to our employees. I am proud to work for such a company. Our business purpose: Doing now what patients need next is truly an integral part of our culture and our operations and this creates a strong true north for us all.
As I immersed myself in work, I also began to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of the PSS operating model and vision; of bringing purpose to life by providing our People with integrated solutions that are tailored to their needs for HR relevant enquiries at Roche; whenever and wherever they need it, enabling them to better support our patients. Guided by that vision, the PSS team aspires to provide sustainable services with consistent high quality for our Roche colleagues.
On a macro level, Roche was undergoing a transformation. As a key enabler of the overall People & Culture Transformation and new Operating Model, People Support Solutions is also going through its own transformation. The end goal of the transformation is to extend more support to middle and small sized countries, and People & Culture fields. I felt the importance of change occurring within the company, and I was thrilled that I applied for this role and had the opportunity to actively participate in this journey of change from the beginning.
An Unstoppable Vision
From China to Malaysia during the Pandemic, my journey has been challenging and yet rewarding. As I reflect, the entire experience has built my resilience.
I am now based in Malaysia and responsible for the role of Country Group Lead in APAC People Support Solutions (PSS). I am leading the teams in Kuala Lumpur and collaborating with other teams in China to support all P&C related operations topics in APAC countries in the networked model.
When I first arrived in the country in March, the breakouts of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia had just begun, and I had to once again quarantine myself in my apartment for three and a half months before meeting my new team members face-to-face. All our training transitioned from physical to digital, at the same time, our trainers discovered ways to make the learning process as exciting and engaging as possible. We successfully created many significant milestones despite the pandemic and lockdowns, and this would not have been possible without the PSS teams team's support and determination to succeed.
Together, we make a difference
Roche provides a work environment that helps us achieve our goals. We get a sense of accomplishment from our work and have sufficient opportunities to work on assignments to gain new skills. Employees are encouraged to build their careers and pursue their passions. Learning and development is strongly supported. It’s clear to us what career opportunities are out there and they go to the most qualified people.
Roche has a thriving and collaborative work culture that is open and accepts individual differences. At the same time, we always encourage our teams to come up with new and better ways of doing things at work. We welcome all talents who believe in themselves to join our teams and to walk through this journey together. There will always be challenges that we face in our careers, but keep in mind, we will go through all these phases as a team.
