Meet Martin, the General Manager of the APAC Shared Service Center

General Manager of the APAC Shared Service Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Hi, my name is ….

Martin, and I head the APAC Shared Services Center (SSC) in Kuala Lumpur. Out of Kuala Lumpur we are delivering Finance, Procurement and IT Services to 15 countries in the APAC region.

Before Roche, I worked at IBM for 13 years, first in Finance and then in Global Procurement. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and hold a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Warwick.

Joining Roche was a great career move for me; it makes such a difference to wake up in the morning knowing you work for a company that helps to save patient’s lives – this is the best motivator one can have!

I joined Roche in 2011 in the IT Procurement team based in the HQ in Basel, Switzerland. Three years later, I assumed an opportunity in Hungary in the capacity of P2P Director for the SSC in Budapest before moving to my current position in Malaysia in May 2016.

In my time outside the office, I enjoy the company of friends, doing cardio training in the gym and following VfB Stuttgart, the soccer club I support. I also treasure the time I get to spend with my mother and 4 siblings, 2 nephews and 2 nieces when I visit Germany.

How are you contributing through your work at Roche to help patients? How does working in Shared Services (SSC) help you improve the lives of patients?

Although our daily duties in the Shared Services Center do not directly impact patients, it is very important that my team understands the link we have to our purpose – Doing now what patients need next.

By taking over transactional activities in IT and Finance, the SSC enables our affiliates to concentrate on the core business, to bring our medicines to patients. We want to be the partner for the affiliates by providing first-class support in these non-core activities for them.

Additionally with standardizing and harmonizing processes we deliver more transparency, which in turn helps the business make faster decisions.

What are the positive challenges your job offers you?

The SSC in Kuala Lumpur was established in April 2016. It is very fulfilling to see a fast growing, motivated & passionate team all geared up to make us successful.

When we first started the center it was like working in a small family. However, after a short time the family grew bigger and bigger – and it has not stopped. A positive challenge is to have all employees feeling part of this big family, and being highly engaged.

It is challenging to ramp-up the delivery of Finance, Procurement and IT Services for new affiliates. We want to free up resources, but unfortunately in some cases there are individuals that have been impacted by these changes; we want to be very mindful about this.

It is very important for us to work closely together with the Roche Affiliates in the Asia Pacific region. However, I do not see this as a challenge, I am very thankful for the openness and support we receive from our colleagues, many thanks for this!

Please complete the following sentence:

Roche is a great place to work because of our purpose. All of us work very hard, to be part of this overarching aim, to save patient’s lives!

Thanks for your story!
