Meet Eric, Study Data Manager at Roche

Tell us a bit about yourself

I was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Toronto with my parents at the young of 6. My hobbies include a variety of things such as photography, building models, snowboarding, playing basketball and video games. In the last couple of years I have enjoyed spending most (if not all) of my time with my wife, 4-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter.

Before I joined Roche in 2014 my career was a bit of an adventure. I started off as a biotech salesman, then became a banker and eventually found my way back to molecular biology and clinical research. I will never regret taking the long road to discover what I liked because it broadened my horizons and expanded my network.

What is your current position at Roche Canada?

My official title is Study Data Manager. I belong to the Clinical Data Management group which is under the umbrella of Biometrics. We provide oversight of the data for Roche’s clinical studies and ensure data quality is our number one priority.

How would you describe Roche as an Employer?

Roche truly breaks the mold of what I envision a typical mega corporation to be. First of all, being a global company, the opportunities are endless. Roche cares for the well-being of all its employees. It’s not easy running an 85,000+ army of employees with this much emphasis on individual development and care but it is obvious that upper management truly believes in investing in their employees and this attitude is passed down from one employee to the next, creating a unified culture.

Roche also lives on their slogan of “doing now what patients need next”. Every employee displays a high level of enthusiasm to innovate, provide hope and preserve quality of life for patients, which is truly an invigorating experience.

What makes this a great place to work?

Roche is a very diverse workplace. People come from all over the world so you will have the opportunity to meet people of different backgrounds with various experiences.

Roche is truly a one-of-a-kind company. It’s such a mega organization yet it’s surprisingly nimble and personal at the same time. Every day I go to work I feel like I am contributing to a critical step despite the plethora of processes we have. What’s most important is that I know that the colleagues I work with have a shared vision of success and that is what makes Roche such a great place to work!
