The pathology liaison is a specialized, field-based pathology expert within the Medical Scientific Affairs division. 


The candidate will be responsible for facilitating and developing the relationship with the medical/scientific community for their assigned geographic region, by communicating product-related information to customers, investigators and institutions. The ideal candidate will interpret results in slide reviews for product assessment and work to educate customers on proper utilization of diagnostic tests. 


The pathology liaison will share their diagnostic experiences and insights with the Scientific Partners, the Disease Area Partners, and other RDC stakeholders to ensure the development and delivery of the appropriate medical value messages to technical and clinical stakeholders.  Additionally, the pathology liaison will be integral in sharing the value of current, new, and emerging companion diagnostics within the division, as well as with customers and patients. 

The pathology liaison will understand the current diagnostic testing landscape, and be the primary communicator of novel developments and concepts to pathologists, histotechnologists, and other lab personnel.  Using their professional networks and close connections to customers, the Pathology liaison will deliver external insights to the division, providing real-time information to the Tissue Scientific Partners. The pathology liaison will work closely with other MSA stakeholders to develop and implement educational programs to broaden the awareness of Roche diagnostic testing. 


  • Bring field-based insights to all MSA team conversations

  • Contribute field-based insights to integrated medical strategy plans with Scientific Partners and Disease Area Partners

  • Deliver scientific exchange and educational solutions for clinicians and laboratorians that have a high impact for patient care, while creating efficiencies for Roche MSA, both in person and virtually as required 

  • Working with the Field Partner and Scientific Partners and other MSA stakeholders, create a tool box of educational tools for the relevant Customer Area so that no one is developing “one off” work. This may be traditional slide decks but you will also need to use less traditional educational tools (podcasts, social media)

  • Develop a robust network outside of the company that can be strategically tapped for speakers, advocacy work, scientific insights

  • Review outputs of internal partners for scientific/technical accuracy and patient centricity

  • Provide coaching and mentorship to Medical Scientific Associates, as assigned 

  • Your role involves both office work and significant field effort.  You will be required to regularly collaborate with your Field Partner, Scientific Partners, Disease Area Partners, DANL, Strategic Healthcare Partners and others to prioritize where your efforts will have the biggest impact. 

  • Must maintain knowledge of applicable research and literature 

  • May respond to unsolicited requests for information about unapproved products or uses, or off-label information.

  • Facilitates and develops the relationship with the medical/scientific community, by communicating product-related information to investigators and institutions consistent with Roche’s Good Promotional Practices. 

  • Stays current on research developments, and new concepts in medical treatment and scientific technology, giving perspective to field activities associated with growing existing products, and bringing new products to market.

  • The pathologist will work extensively with customers, particularly in slide reviews for product assessment.

  • Builds relationships and demonstrates the clinical outcome and benefits of company products to thought leaders. 

  • Educates on products to scientific and clinical customers.

  • Coordinates continuing education workshops, seminars, and programs for graduate physicians, pharmacists, and scientists.

  • Addresses customer’s scientific inquiries (on-label and off-label unsolicited requests), documents requests and actions, customer scientific and clinical applications at site.

  • Communicates project information/customer interaction to internal stakeholders. Attends appropriate U.S. and international scientific congresses, develops in-depth understanding of clinical practices and regulations.

  • Maintains understanding and insight into current lab and clinical practices and guidelines and investigates and reports internally on competitor technologies and products.

  • Expert in reviewing and communicating scientific literature.  

  • Integrates their activities into the overall MSA field-based team strategy.

  • In collaboration with other MSA team members, develop educational programs for pathologists. S/he will attend scientific forums and drive corporate advisory boards in order to remain current, as needed.

  • Companion Diagnostic (as well as other high-medical value launches) will require extensive involvement from the pathologist. Peer-to-peer training for new customers is critical. 

  • Involved with peer-to-peer training for new and existing customers for tissue-specific diagnostic tests (companion, complementary, HMVA, pharma partners)

  • Acts as a coach and mentor for colleagues and peers to develop skills, expertise 

  • Supports the creation of an inspiring team environment with agile, open, and inclusive culture 

  • Must maintain knowledge of applicable research and literature 

  • May respond to unsolicited requests for information about unapproved products or uses, or off-label information.



MD degree is required with a background of focus in Pathology (anatomic and molecular expertise required) and 3 years of experience



  • Board certification / eligibility in molecular genetic pathology is preferred

  • Experience and/or training in molecular and genetic pathology is preferred

  • Experience with assay development and commercialization is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with wide variety of laboratory and healthcare professionals

  • Ability to understand, interpret and present a wide range of scientific and medical topics

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential

  • For Colorado-based applicants, the expected salary range for this position is $167K - $204K. This range will vary, depending on where the person resides within the U.S. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits listed below.
