Responsible for initiating, directing and executing scientific research, development and manufacturing process strategies to support new and existing products. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems. Plans and executes laboratory research. Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the art principles and theories. Makes contributions to scientific literature and conferences. Serves as an in-house and outside consultant. May act as a spokesperson for corporate scientific affairs and advise top management. Participates in development of patent applications. Promotes and participates in the professional development of scientists and laboratory facilities. Uses professional concepts to contribute to the development of product or process principles and to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways.


  • Conceives, plans, designs and conducts advanced independent research in compound, assay, process, product or method development to support on-going production, continuous improvements and new product transfer.

  • Receives general direction and exercises considerable discretion as to work details.

  • Contributes to the definition and timely achievement of overall project goals.

  • Participates or leads in efforts to define new components, products or processes.

  • Identifies and solves technical challenges.

  • Identifies and implements improvements to work processes.

  • Creates potentially patentable components for systems, reagents or processes.

  • Designs, plans and executes project related tasks.

  • Designs and executes experiments to test hypothesis related to project outcomes.

  • Applies advanced scientific knowledge to projects; determines priorities for experiments.

  • Independently designs and executes experiments.

  • Utilizes DOE as appropriate.

  • Assures experimental quality through sound, independent, experimental design.

  • Participates or leads cross functional technical teams such as a failure investigation or core team.

  • Establishes interfaces across other organizational groups.

  • Provides technical direction and feedback to others.

  • Teaches others and troubleshoots problems.

  • Participates in project planning, process updates and contributes to experimental design.

  • Prepares and delivers presentations of project results to others; presents data to larger and more diverse audiences.

  • Monitors work to ensure quality, and continuously promote Quality First Time.


  • Bachelors degree plus 10 years relevant experience OR

  • Masters Degree plus 5 years OR PhD and 2 years relevant experience.

  • Strong background in structure-based protein analysis and engineering.  Experience with computational protein engineering and antibody epitope modeling.

  • Experience with protein purification and characterization, including HPLC, FPLC, immunoaffinity, SDS-PAGE, and WB.

  • Experience with mammalian cell culture and cell culture process development.

  • Domain knowledge in oncology, immunology, or neurology.

  • Demonstrated record of scientific accomplishment, with a history of publications and presentations.

  • Strong work ethic and collaborative attitude.

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with a deep commitment to working as part of teams and recognizing the strengths of everyone on the team.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought.

  • Expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.

  • Applies advanced technical writing skills to produce reports and documents; writes independently; evaluates the writing of others.

Preferred (valued) skills:

  • Experience with display technologies (yeast or phage).

  • Experience with cutting-edge biologics formats including bi- and multi-specific antibodies.

  • Experience with bio-orthogonal chemistry, probe development, and/or proximity labeling techniques.

  • Experience with multi-color Flow Cytometry/sorting.
