As a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Sr. ME) within the Roche Sequencing Solutions Division, you will help with the design, development and integration efforts for new scientific and diagnostic instruments. These instruments consist of fluidic, mechatronic, pneumatic, thermal, optical and electrical sub-systems and play a critical role in highly automated DNA sequencing pipelines and other diagnostic applications. Responsibilities include interpreting requirements, evaluating components and designing custom fixtures, modules and sub-assemblies. Other critical functions include sub-system and system level assembly, testing and troubleshooting, as well as analyzing data, writing reports and presenting results.  You will also work closely with other engineers and scientists on integration efforts.

The ideal candidate shall exhibit a high degree of ingenuity and resourcefulness to help us solve problems, invent new technology and develop cutting-edge products. The candidate must also have

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Bioengineering with a minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience designing, building, and/or supporting life science instrumentation or diagnostic/medical devices. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are highly preferred. Candidates with exceptional aptitude and experience from other fields or disciplines will also be considered

  • Contributed to the design or development of at least one life science instrument or diagnostic device

  • Solid understanding of physics and mechanical engineering fundamentals

  • A positive, can-do attitude and excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated success working in multidisciplinary team environments

  • Proficiency with CAD for mechanical design and FEA simulations (Solidworks highly preferred)

  • Proficiency with common machine shop tools as well as test and measurement equipment

  • Experience with Python, LabVIEW or similar tools for device control and data acquisition

  • Experience with rapid prototyping technology such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC mills/lathes

  • Experience with MATLAB and Python for analysis, modeling and simulations.

  • Experience with Solidworks PDM or similar document management tools

  • Experience with design control under ISO standards

  • Knowledge of GD&T

  • Experience with mechanical and electromechanical systems in one or more of the following areas: Motion (stepper and/or BLDC servo motors), thermal (TECs, PID, thermistors, thermocouples, RTDs, cartridge heaters, etc), and fluidic/pneumatic (cylinders, pumps, valves, solenoids, regulators, sensors)

  • Understanding of chemistry, biological assays and sequencing technology
