Job Summary

The Senior Project Engineer for Mechanical Design is the MEP knowledge keeper of the Engineering Team in the Regional Engineering Americas (REA) department and is responsible to manage the MEP part of multiple capital investment projects in parallel. He or She supports the Project Manager to deliver the project by taking over full accountability for the MEP part of the project across all phases. The Sr. Project Engineer manages the design to ensure project meets business requirements and is delivered within cost, time and safety parameters. He or she provides guidance (Roche standards, directives and sustainability commitments, Total Cost of Ownership analysis, future-proof design) to our contracted design and construction & commissioning partners. This position will also inspect work-in-place during installation for conformance with construction documents and Roche specific guidelines and directives. Pending on project portfolio the Sr. Project Engineer has to manage one or more capital projects (where MEP is the lead subject) under the direction of the Director Capital Projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Evaluate (review and comment) user requests, loads & capacity and designers supply strategies, provide options and alternative view to the designers, establish user requirements
  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of competent MEP design/consulting firms and contractors, manage resource pool and support project staffing
  • develop KPIs and benchmarks for design and construction cost, performance and progress tracking for the contractors and their deliverables
  • Remain up-to-date with relevant corporate requirements/directives
  • Research new and innovative technologies
  • Participate in project designer selection
  • Facilitate design workshops, engage, train and manage external consultants when necessary to evaluate MEP design and to perform energy analysis
  • Materials and/or systems evaluations and recommendations
  • Review mechanical and lighting design for compliance with corporate energy conservation requirements
  • Review drawings and specifications (Divisions 01, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28, 33, 42, 48) throughout design phases for;
    • Content and completeness (quality)
    • Alignment with corporate/project requirements
    • Materials/systems concerns
    • Constructability
    • Maintainability
    • Inspection/testing requirements
  • Determining progress of design and construction effort and compare to plan
  • Develop and maintain a list of design review comments (project record) including design development log and user change requests
  • Inspect construction activities as required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • MEP system design for utilities, manufacturing, office and laboratory buildings
  • Energy modelling
  • Life cycle cost analysis
  • Energy and water conservation measures for mechanical systems
  • Energy conservation and automation strategies for lighting systems
  • Building automation systems and the ability to develop sequences of operation

Skills and abilities:

  • Proficiency in using MS Office & Google applications
  • Very good analytical skills
  • Ability to troubleshoot and work independently as well as within a team
  • Ability to develop presentations and deliver to senior leadership
  • Experienced in working in diverse and international teams of a global player
  • The job holder is flexible to travel (up to at least 40% of the time) or temporary relocate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with at least 3 years of facilities project management related experience or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with 5 years of facilities project management related experience
  • At least 1 year of previous responsibility for leading or managing people formally or informally
  • Strong computer skills including project scheduling software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability in prioritizing multiple projects with varying scopes of responsibility
  • Strong analytical skills and problem solving ability

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with at least 8 years of experience in project management in principle in one Site.
  • At least 3 year of previous responsibility for leading or managing people formally or informally
