Meet Yvonne, Development Engineer at Roche
Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Yvonne and I have been at Roche for a year and a half. I am Swiss and grew up in a village in the canton of Zurich. For some years I have been living in the beautiful little town of Zug, which is half way between Zurich and Lucerne.
In my spare time I like to do a variety of activities. I practice yoga, which helps me to relax and focus on the important things in life. I also take care of the horse of a good friend of mine at weekends. Working with horses is a great experience and it’s interesting to see how much I can learn and develop personally from it. In addition, I recently started learning the piano, which is quite challenging. But what is life without challenges?
Besides my hobbies, I love to travel around the world together with my husband. It is great to get to know different cultures and meet people, see beautiful places, take pictures of unique sceneries and try local food.
In which Roche location are you currently working and what can you tell us about that location as a work environment?
I currently work as a product owner in Rotkreuz in central Switzerland. It is a multicultural workplace and the department I work for is spread over four different sites located in three different places in Europe and in North America. In the past, I was employed by a traditional local medium-sized company, which was completely different from working at Roche. With over 2500 employees, the campus is huge and is still growing. But one can still build up a network easily as everybody is very open-minded.
The site can be reached by car or public transport. Thanks to the good transport links, it is easy to live in Zug, Lucerne or Zurich and work here in Rotkreuz. And it is also close to the Lake Zug and you can enjoy your lunch break outside in the countryside if you want to go for a work out.
Why did you decide to join Roche and why at this location?
After being at my first company for ten years, I was looking for a new challenge such as working for a bigger, multicultural company. Roche is simply the perfect employer if that is what you are looking for. Since I joined, I feel I have been given a lot of support for my individual development. In this multicultural environment, I am in contact with numerous different people, here on site and around the world. I love working in Switzerland and being in contact with people around the world.
What is your current position at Roche?
As an owner of an internal product, I liaise with representatives of many of our software development teams. The challenge is to drive this product in the right direction, which means delivering the requested features to the teams, defining a sustainable and efficient solution and understanding the needs of all the different teams involved at the same time. In my role, I am not directly involved in developing medical devices; instead, we focus on automating our software build process using Microsoft Team Foundation Server, which is part of our tool chain.
It is great to work in a technical field where the pace of change is rapid and there are many opportunities while at the same time being in contact with small and large teams at different sites around the world. Another thing I like about my work is that I have a considerable amount of freedom and that we are all expected to improve quality and processes.
Can you choose at least three of the Roche attributes and explain in detail what they mean to you?
How would you describe the people working here?
They are ambitious in what they do and focus on continuously improving themselves.
