Meet Till Dorin, Team Lead Talent Management

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Till Dorin. I was born 34 years ago in Cologne and now live in Basel. I joined Roche in January 2008, having come from a consulting company. My focus was and still is SAP HR Systems.
When I am not at Roche, I spend time with my little family. Coming home has been even more exciting since our little daughter was born in 2010. I love spending time with my friends and enjoying the Rhine in summertime.

Where did you study?

I studied at the University of Cologne. I hold a diploma in “Wirtschaftsinformatik”, a combined course of study of computer science and economics. I had two focuses: the first was Personnel Economics and the second Management of System Development. Both help me perfectly with my current position at Roche as the head of the Talent Management team within the HR system support organisation.

In which Roche location are you currently working?

I started in Basel and am still in love with the city. I came here for the first time as a consultant and did not want to leave after my project assignment.

What can you tell us about that location?

Basel is the headquarters of Roche. I started within the Diagnostics Division, where we were only about 80 employees in Basel. This was a nice and small group where you could literally know everybody. Now I am part of the Group organisation, where the staff in my department already exceeds this number.
I live pretty close to the main site. I love having the Rhine River in walking distance, since it reminds me of my hometown Cologne. Commuting by bike takes me eight minutes in the morning and three minutes in the evening since the bridge on the way to work is a little steep.
The city has a lot to offer in terms of cultural activities, party scenes, and, most importantly, swimming in the Rhine!
And last but not least, the Basel “Fasnacht”, which is a great addition to the Cologne carnival that ends one week prior.

Why did you decide to join Roche?

When Roche approached me for a job, I did not hesitate much. I was already working with the colleagues in the SAP HR team during my consultant assignment. I liked the openness, dedication to success, and great collaboration within the team. Furthermore, the organisation supporting the global HR system has a global structure – that attracted me as well. From a technical perspective, it fascinated me that Roche is typically one of the early adopters for new SAP technology.

What is your current job?

I head a cross-functional team of ten SAP HR experts. My team takes care of the global strategic HR processes Compensation Management, Performance Management, and Succession & Talent Management. We are responsible for keeping the global SAP HR system alive and improving it further. As the global Talent Management delivery team, we contribute to the success of our global processes through enhancement projects and supporting existing solutions. The team is spread over several locations in Europe and the US.
Since those are processes every employee at Roche uses and benefits from, we are never bored; there is always something to improve or new features that could be added to support our customers and colleagues even better.

What makes it such a great job?

I love dealing with people. And the team that I have the honour of managing is very interesting; I have never come across such a diverse team. Everyone is very dedicated to the success of the global HR system and curious to learn and try out new things.
What motivates me as well is that we have a lot of challenges every day – not a single day is the same as any other. We have a lot of opportunities to try new approaches and new technologies.

Can you pick at least three of the attributes of Roche and explain in detail what they mean to you?

  • Work/life balance: There is a wide range of offers to ensure work/life balance. Especially in my organisation – the IT group functions – the whole leadership team lives and works with a good work/life balance in mind. Everyone makes a lot of effort to ensure that everyone can balance both worlds. For sure there are crunch times where the workload is pretty high, but there are a lot of ways to balance this out over the year.
    There is a long list of options ranging from working from home to flexible working times that help to balance work and life.For me personally, that means that I can spend an afternoon with my daughter at the zoo to balance longer working hours on other days.
  • Respect: Having grown up in the area of Cologne, where people are very direct, I find Roche to be a very typical Swiss company. I have found a lot of understatement, mutual respect, compromise orientation, and dedication to improving patients’ lives as part of the Roche culture.
  • Development opportunities: Roche gives me a lot of room to grow. I have various training opportunities to develop myself. By job-rotations, project assignments, and exposure to new roles in the organisation, I have been able to broaden my horizons.
    From my personal experience, I can say that Roche is dedicated to developing everyone in the company. I have been given great opportunities for training programmes and my bosses have helped me by exposing me to leadership positions.
