Meet Chris Rahe, Senior Auditor Group Audit & Risk Advisory

Tell us a bit about yourself

I was born in southern California and spent most of my childhood close to the mountains in Colorado. My university life was split between California and the Lausanne area, where I spent a few years studying abroad and doing internships with a major multinational food and beverage company. I spent just over 3 years working internationally as an internal auditor after university, again out of the Lausanne region, and moved to Basel early in 2014 to begin my career with Roche. In my personal life, I invest most of my time in endurance sports, travel, and "irritating" my friends and family.

Which Roche location do you currently work at, and what can you tell us about that location as a work environment?

I work in our offices at Picassoplatz, Basel just across the Rhine from the main Grenzacherstrasse site. It’s an ideal location for me, as my commute is less than 10 minutes by either bike or tram. There are great restaurants within walking distance, and I can easily go for distance runs along the river during lunch if I have the time.

Why did you decide to join Roche and why at this location?

Two primary factors drove my decision to join Roche: the quality of the people who interviewed me, and the chance to work for a company that had an impact on patients’ lives. I get a significant amount of inspiration from knowing that my company’s efforts can improve the quality and longevity of lives across the world. There are not many industries that offer that kind of motivation.

What is your current position at Roche?

As an internal auditor, it’s my responsibility to travel to our affiliates around the world and ensure that key business risks are identified and properly handled. That way we can continue to provide patients with our products in a manner that is consistent with our corporate principles and the regulatory environment of each country in which we operate. The position has several key benefits, including contact with senior management in risk identification and reporting, frequent international travel, exposure to all aspects of company operations, and a daily working environment that encourages a high level of performance. The job is a continuous and ever-changing challenge.

How would you describe Roche as an employer?

Roche is one of the rare companies in today’s business environment that lives its key principles. As an employee with less than one year’s experience in the company, I can see and feel these principles in discussions with my line manager, with key stakeholders during assignments, and with colleagues I meet in passing. Roche is an employer that lives its values and provides stability and direction for its key assets: its employees. My colleagues are always in good spirits, our work environment is constructive when necessary, but always upbeat, and the opportunity for personal development and additional responsibility or challenges is always present.

How would you describe the people working here?

Roche employees have a fierce dedication to everything they do. Whether they’re working in research and development, caring for their family or training to achieve personal records in sporting events, these people do not do things by halves. Their passion is infectious.

How is your job connected to “doing now what patients need next”?

My job helps to ensure that the business remains compliant with local regulations and public expectations, and as such it helps Roche retain its operating license. We also play a role in helping the company share best practices and in implementing efficient controls and business processes. The more we can help the company to become efficient in key activities, the more we can invest in research and improving patients’ lives.
