Meet Alexis, Junior BI Specialist

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hello, my name is Alexis, I’m 25 years old and I live in France.

I’m passionate about new technologies and mobile devices.

I’m currently working for Pharma Informatics in the Business Intelligence department in Basel.

I studied Informatics in Strasbourg and I joined Roche in April 2011 for my end-of-study internship. This internship was a chance for me to improve my technical knowledge and to design some reporting solutions. After these six months I applied for an open position in my team and was offered a permanent contract here in Basel. What a nice start for my career!

Where did you study?

I studied IT at SupInfo University in Strasbourg. I hold a Master’s degree in computer sciences and wrote a thesis about mobile reporting solutions.

In which Roche location are you currently working?

I’m working at the Headquarters in Basel, Switzerland.

What can you tell us about that location?

The Basel site is enormous! With more than 8,000 employees, the site looks like a little town and yet it is well integrated into the city. Roche also provides plenty of on-site services; you can find a post office, several ATMs, a dry cleaner’s, a shoe repair, food kiosks, cafeterias and even a swimming pool there.

Next to the offices there is also a large park near the Rhine which is a good spot for an outdoor lunch break during the summer.

The site is also very well served by public transport. I commute from France by train every day.

Why did you decide to join Roche?

The possibility of completing an end-of-study internship in a big company is a student’s dream. When I saw an open student position on the Roche careers website, I didn’t hesitate and submitted my CV. Working for a pharmaceutical company is exciting. You know that the goal of your company is to make people better.

What is your current job?

I work for Pharma informatics as a junior BI specialist. Business Intelligence (BI) uses the company data to provide meaningful information and analysis to employees, customers, suppliers and partners for more effective decision-making. So I’m building reporting tools and dashboards in order to analyse the company’s spending.

My main tasks are to understand business requirements and processes and to translate them into a platform-specific solution and I develop and customise SAP Business Warehouse products for this. I’m also developing some mobile reporting solutions for iPhone and iPad users.

What makes it such a great job?

The diversity!  I work with several tools and am in touch with the procurement users. It allows me to develop both my technical and business knowledge.

Can you pick at least three of the attributes of Roche and explain in detail what they mean to you?

  • Development opportunities: Roche focuses on the development of employees. It provides  training in many areas and has allowed me to perform two SAP-related courses already.

  • Future career opportunities:  I really think that it’s possible to have a great career at Roche. In such a large company, there are a lot of development opportunities and guidance. I am in charge of driving my own career.

  • Work/life balance: As a student I always wondered how working for a company would impact on my private life. Since working for Roche I can successfully manage both. The workload is well distributed over the year and thanks to the flexible system I can manage my working hours. Working for the IT group is also an advantage, thanks to the Roche VPN (enterprise network) as I can work from home if I have any problem in coming to the office.

Please complete the following sentence: Roche is a great place to work because... can develop your skills in various areas.

How would you describe the people working here?

All the people I met in Basel are open, helpful and friendly. One other characteristic of the Basel site is also the diversity of the employees’ nationalities and cultures.

This diversity is an opportunity. When I was a student I never expected to work with people from all over the world.

What would you advise job seekers who want to join us?

Be confident and apply online.
