Meet Ryan O.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I grew up in Pendleton, Indiana, USA, and graduated from Pendleton Heights High School in 1999. I completed my undergraduate degree at Indiana University in 2003. I started at Roche in August of 2003 as an Accu-Chek Customer Care Representative. In September of 2004, I moved to Domestic Shipping where I worked until May of 2010. I then took a job in Roche Order Management where I currently work. I enjoy doing nearly anything outdoors, but my main hobbies are deer and turkey hunting. I also enjoy working outside and riding a four-wheeled motorcycle on my family’s property in southern Indiana.
Where did you study?
Indiana University Bloomington
In which Roche location are you currently working?
I work in Indianapolis, Indiana. I have about a 30-minute commute from my house. The campus is large and made up of 14 main buildings and a large employee park, which is a nice feature with a pond, basketball court, softball/baseball field, area for gardening and a wooded area. During the warmer months of the year you will always see employees walking and relaxing in the park during their breaks.
Why did you decide to join Roche?
I grew up about 20 miles from the Roche Indianapolis Campus so I was aware of Roche due to their involvement in the community. After I graduated from college it was a natural place for me to look for employment. The stability and the benefits that Roche provides were very attractive to me as well. Also, I was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes in 1997 and my meter was made by Boehringer-Mannheim, which was acquired by Roche, so I had knowledge of the company and products from that standpoint.
What is your current job?
I work in RDO Order Management. I handle orders for all of Latin America as well as for France. I also have responsibilities for our domestic affiliates around the United States. My main function is to make sure that the orders for my affiliates that come through the Indianapolis hub arrive when they are needed. In order to do this, I coordinate with Roche International in Switzerland and also with the affiliate. I also monitor reports to ensure that orders are properly flowing through our system, and work with my colleagues to fix any issues that arise.
What makes it such a great job?
I get to speak with people in other countries and learn about their families and traditions. My job has opened my eyes to a worldview that I did not have before.
Can you pick at least three of the attributes of Roche and explain in detail what they mean to you?
Products – I was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes at the age of 16 and I have used a Roche blood glucose meter since then, so I understand the trust that a customer places in our products.
Development opportunities - I have been given the opportunity to develop both personally and professionally at Roche. My job responsibilities have opened my eyes to the world in a way that I hadn’t seen it before.
Future career opportunities – I feel strongly that I am building a career here that is just beginning. I am confident in my future opportunities at Roche.
Please complete the following sentence:
Roche is a great place to work because…it is an innovative and stable company that invests in its employees.
How would you describe the people working here?
The people who work in Indianapolis are friendly and willing to collaborate in order to achieve success. In my department we “think out loud” in order to come up with a solid strategy for dealing with any issues. By doing this we almost always identify the flaws in the plan before we implement it.
What would you advise job seekers who want to join us?
Don’t be afraid to take an entry-level job and work your way up. There are opportunities for those who have the right skills and education.
Thanks for your story!
