Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Trevor and I am currently a senior at University of California, San Diego, pursuing a degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. This is my third summer working for Roche Molecular Diagnostics as an intern and currently working in the Research PCR department. In the future I plan to pursue a career in the Biotechnology industry, specifically healthcare oriented. When I am not working or studying I enjoy hiking, fishing, and skateboarding.
In which Roche location are you currently working and what can you tell us about that location as a work environment?
I am currently working at Roche Molecular Diagnostics in Pleasanton. Being a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, coming back these three summers has been an extremely welcomed opportunity. Not only is the Bay Area a hub for technology and innovation, which I find particularly inspiring, but the warm people and ambitious environment of this location truly make it a place I am excited to go to every day of my internships and work as hard as I can.
Why did you decide to choose Roche for your internship?
My experience with Roche began in High School where my school’s Biotechnology Pathway Program culminated in an independent research project. Given my budget as a summer camp counselor, I could not afford the price of the Roche kit needed to process and analyze my samples. I contacted sales representatives and the kit was graciously donated to me. Upon contacting the various schools in the surrounding area for a microplate reader to analyze my results, I again reached out and was allowed to use an available instrument at the Roche Molecular Diagnostics Pleasanton site. Following the amazing experience of getting to come into a professional lab at such a large influential company, I was encouraged by the people at RMD I had met to apply for the internship program following a year of college. I applied the winter after and have been involved for the last two summers as an intern in Genomics and Oncology Research. I have had the opportunity to work alongside such brilliant and kind people doing types of science I would have never had the opportunity to do as a 21 year old if it wasn’t for Roche; all while knowing that my hard work translated, even indirectly, to improving the lives of patients. This is what has kept me wanting to choose Roche for my internships.
How would you describe your internship?
It has been an exciting internship and an environment where I am expanding my skill sets each day. Similar to my two previous summers, everyone I have met has been extremely kind and enthusiastic about their work which has been very inspiring to make the most significant contribution I can during my internship.
What do you like best about your experience so far?
Just the opportunity to work at a company like Roche has been an amazing and truly humbling experience, but I would say that the drive and ambition I see in everyone around me during my internships is something I appreciate greatly. I come to work wanting to further challenge myself every day to match that drive I see and improve my skills as a scientist.
What advice would you give future students who want to join us?
I would advise future students wanting to join Roche that no matter which aspect of the company you are interested in becoming involved with; having a passion towards improving patient lives and an ambition to be constantly searching for opportunities to improve yourself is very important.
