Meet Nina, PhD student at Technical Research and Development
Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Nina, I am 28 years old and I started to work at Roche Basel during my practical year, which is part of the education for pharmacists. These six months of internship offered me the unique possibility to get to know the multifaceted pharma world for the first time.
In my free time I like to travel long-distance during my holidays, and so far I visited beautiful places in Vietnam, Thailand, USA and Argentina. In my favourite season of the year, in summer, I love to spend my free time outside in the sun, go for a walk in the countryside, and meet friends at the river in Basel for a relaxed get-together.
In which Roche location are you currently working and what can you tell us about that location as a work environment?
I am currently working at Roche Pharma in Basel. It is one of Roche’s largest sites, with over 10,000 people working here. Different departments are located in close proximity within the site, which makes it easy to work together with people from different departments Also, getting in contact with new people or staying in contact with former colleagues is much easier thanks to the site infrastructure. Being located close to the Rhine and Basel city centre makes this site a great place to work.
Why did you decide to join Roche and why for this location?
Roche as an innovative pharmaceutical company surrounded by the beautiful historical city of Basel awakened my interest when I was searching for an opportunity for my internship. The position offered to me in the commercial production of oral dosage forms gave me the chance to apply the knowledge which I gained during my studies and also to broaden my horizons. My time as an intern was extremely valuable for me since I was able, for the first time, to experience the daily business of a pharmaceutical company with all its challenges and accomplishments. Now I am very happy to be able to follow my dream of doing a PhD in this innovative working environment.
What is your current position at Roche?
I work as a PhD student on continuous wet granulation in the department for technical research and development. My daily work is truly varied, spanning research in literature, planning future experiments, reviewing and analyzing data as well as practical work and hands-on experience at the machines. As the projects I work on are in collaboration with Ghent University, I also work abroad from time to time, which offers me the opportunity to exchange ideas with other PhD students who are working in the same research field.
How would you describe Roche as an employer?
What really makes me love to go to work every day is the very encouraging atmosphere I work in. Roche offers various development opportunities and you have the possibility to take your career progression into your own hands. Through participating in different workshops and courses, it is easy to get an insight into other departments and thus to gain a sound understanding of interactions throughout the Roche Group. I really appreciate having the freedom of flexible working times, so that I can perfectly combine my job with hobbies and activities and thus strike a good work-life balance. The company offers me the right balance of freedom and guidance in my daily business, which makes it a great work environment where I can grow, develop and gain experience every day.
How would you describe the people working here?
I like working together in a team with kind and highly educated people who enable me to learn a lot. Also the respectful and open way of communicating makes the daily business run smoothly and pleasantly. My colleagues are various nationalities, so we are a very international team. Working together with various educational backgrounds and cultures contributes to a life at work which is fun and rich in variety.
