Meet Molly, HR Business Partner for IT at Roche

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Molly Wu and I originally come from Shanghai, China. I also spent three years in Australia studying and working. I got my bachelor’s degree in International Marketing in Shanghai and got my master’s degree in Professional Accounting in Australia.

Prior to working at Roche Basel as Global Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) for Information Technology, I was the Principal HRBP at Roche Pharmaceuticals China. I am a human resources professional working for over 10 years in different industries. Besides HR, I have also worked as a marketing executive and an auditor before. All those experiences have helped me to build up a broader perspective and deep understanding of different business models, which enables me to be a strong Human Resources Business Partner within Roche.

In which Roche location are you currently working and what can you tell us about that location as a work environment?

I currently live and work in Basel in conjunction with an international assignment at the Roche headquarters. It is great for me to be able to take a bus or walk to the office. I quite enjoy walking in Basel along the Rhine River and use it as a time for ‘walking meditation’ after a whole day at work. The town is gorgeous.

There are around 10 people in the Global HRBP for Finance & IT team where I work. When I started in Basel, the team members and line manager were all extremely welcoming and supportive. I felt immediately that I was part of the team.

Although I am not a big coffee drinker, I really enjoy the coffee made in the first floor of the building I work in on Grenzacherstrasse.

Why did you decide to join Roche and why at this location?

Roche is truly committed to “Doing now what patients need next.” This commitment is shared wholeheartedly by me. It inspires and motivates me to seek the optimal solutions for business challenges.

My current job in HR gives me the opportunity to work in a global function in Basel. This enables me to make a bigger impact on the business, employees and patients. We find the right people for open positions and develop our own talent within the organization. We also help to build a great place to work for our employees. We believe that everything we do will help our people to be more engaged and motivated to improve the quality of patients’ lives.

As HRBP, I interact with different clients so I am able to adapt to different businesses and a dynamic market situation.

In this context, working with various senior leaders also gives me a perspective of different leadership styles.

What is your current position at Roche?

My current role is a Global Human Resources Business Partner for Information Technology, partnering with Diagnostics Information Technology and Architect, Engineering & Operation. I work with the Head of IT group to diagnose the organization’s needs and lead implementation. I collaborate and coordinate with HR colleagues locally, regionally and globally to ensure a successful implementation of business plans. I provide services in all key HR processes, such as internal talent management, performance management, compensation and career development.

How is your job connected to “Doing now what patients need next“?

When working for Roche, the meaning of working within Human Resources has an extra, important dimension: My work contributes to the development of employees reaching their full potential and making their mark to improve patients’ lives. A human resources role is not just a job, it is a mission.

How would you describe Roche as an employer?

Roche Basel is a very international and dynamic site to work at. There are more than 10 nationalities in my team of 12 people. People bring their different backgrounds and experiences and are open to share best practices.

Roche provides various development opportunities. The experience map offers us paths with different experiences and I can broaden my perspective by going through the different journeys. For me, coming to Basel to take the Global HRBP role, I can gain understanding of the global perspective of HR and learn best practices here.

How would you describe the people working here?

I am delighted to work with my team in China and here in Basel. The people make Roche a great place to work.

The people working for Roche are very open to share and willing to provide support. There are strong shared values. This creates a close connection between people here.

Every day I am excited to go to the office to meet up with the team members and clients and make new connections.
