Meet Marcin, Head of Treasury Controlling at Roche
Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Marcin; I have been with Roche since 2002. I was born and raised in Poland and this is where most of my family still lives – which also means Poland is my favourite holiday destination :). I have a master’s and engineering degree in Computer Science and I am also a chartered accountant (ACCA). Most of my free time is spent with my wife and our two kids – we are a pretty active family. My current interests are varied – I take lots of pictures, read lots of books, run, practice yoga, and recently started learning programming again – I want to write my own iPhone app!
In which Roche location are you currently working and what can you tell us about that location as a work environment?
I am working at Roche Headquarters located in Basel, Switzerland. I think the location is perfect – very close to the main communication lines but also very close to the city centre – the main shopping area is within a 10-minute walk! I live in a small town 10km away from Basel and when it comes to the work commute my only problem is which option to choose from: I can come either by car, by bike or by public transport.
Why did you decide to join Roche and why this location?
After having worked in a Big Four firm for a few years, I wanted to take my career international. The job offer from Roche was the one I decided to accept partly because the company was “doing a lot of good for others” – and I wanted to be part of that – and partly because it offered me a compelling mix of career prospects and attractive compensation. And why Basel? Well – the city is just the right size – small enough to allow me to safely come to work by bike, but big enough to have an airport, plenty of museums and cinemas, and a cosmopolitan vibe.
What is your current position at Roche?
I am the Head of Treasury Controlling within the Group Controlling & Accounting function. Running a small team of finance experts, I make sure that my business partners - mainly Treasury and Tax – receive all the reporting and accounting support they need. We analyse and validate the monthly results, compile the forecasts and business plans, create various reports, and provide accounting expertise. We also interact with Roche’s external auditors. There is a strong monthly rhythm underpinning everything we do – but there is also a lot of variability and exposure to the new and unexpected – which for me is a perfect mix!
How would you describe Roche as an employer?
Roche is good at striking a balance between setting ambitious and challenging goals and making sure its employees are in good physical, emotional and psychological shape to reach them. The relationship between Roche and its employees is based on a deep mutual trust – we give our best but are offered a lot in return – flexible working hours, on-site gym or mindfulness training courses are a few examples of what is available.
How would you describe the people working here?
Roche’s workforce is an amazing blend of cultures, backgrounds and experiences. We are all different but share the same goals and principles, which makes working here a really unique experience. Most people I work with are very good colleagues – and a few became my very good friends as well!
