Meet Patrick, Product Management in the field of laboratory diagnostics at Roche in Mannheim
As a sales company, Roche Diagnostics Deutschland GmbH is responsible for marketing all diagnostics products in the German market. We talked to Patrick about his exciting activities in the product management of laboratory diagnostics.
Hi, my name is…
Patrick and I started to work in my product management position on the 1st of March 2017. During my master studies of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Heidelberg I wanted to discover further job opportunities for myself besides a possible future in academic research.
For this purpose, I have firstly completed a full time internship and subsequently a course-related internship in marketing and product management in sales organization of laboratory diagnostics at Roche Diagnostics Deutschland GmbH. During my time as an intern at Roche I had the opportunity to participate in many exciting projects in product management and to gain insights into the structure and processes of a big corporation.
My huge interest and many positive experiences, which I have gained during my internship, finally led me to my actual product management role for IT solutions in the organization of laboratory diagnostics in Mannheim.
How does a typical working day in Marketing & Product Management look like?
In general, there is no typical working day. Marketing and Product Management is the central interface between sales, customers, services and product development. Due to the diversity of interactions within and outside the company every day is unpredictable but pleasant. Besides the creation of marketing materials, planning and implementation of trainings, strategic positioning of the product line as well as the conception of campaigns around the own product lines, there are several opportunities to participate in exciting projects.
Which aspects of your work do you enjoy most?
It´s particular this variety that brings great joy – not to know exactly which challenges are waiting for me at the beginning of the week. And, of course, to work in a great team driving projects and achieving mutual success.
Which competencies should a future intern in product management bring with himself or herself?
As an intern you are a full team member. Therefore, the most important competence is to be an active team player. Furthermore, it is beneficial to have organizational skills as well as having a creative, independent and structured course of action. Above all, you should be motivated and enjoy working with people.
