Andreas Schmitz graduated in International Management from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences before working for the software company SAP. There he worked as a local and global human resources partner in Walldorf, Germany and Palo Alto, USA, before starting his career at Roche in 2011. During this time he had various positions of increasing responsibility and was most recently Head of Human Resources at the Penzberg site.
As of June 1st, 2019, Andreas Schmitz will be Head of Human Resources at Roche Diagnostics GmbH, succeeding Edgar Vieth, who is retiring.
What's your most valuable career experience?
Having lived and worked in the Bay Area in the U.S. for several years was a very demanding and rewarding experience for me. Especially the transition from a local to a global role and the adaptation to a new culture cost me a lot of energy in the first months. But then it was a lot of fun and I was able to expand my horizon enormously.
What inspires you to work at Roche?
There are two dimensions that inspire me most. First, these super dedicated and very talented people who give their best every day. Sometimes I think it's incredible how intelligent my colleagues are and what creative ideas they develop.
Secondly, Roche gives me the opportunity to contribute my skills and competencies and continue to position our company as an attractive workplace. This means that I have an impact on how we contribute to enhancing people's quality of life with our drugs and diagnostics. And that makes me very proud.
And what are your favorite things to do when you're not working?
I enjoy the time I spend with my wife Mareike and our three children. But I am also a huge basketball fan and I try to shoot the ball myself from time to time, at least if my knee and ankles allow it (laughs).
Many thanks to Andreas Schmitz for his time and we wish him all the best for his new position!
