Will it return?

Researchers have found that looking at the patterns of a number of different genes can help predict whether or not a cancer is likely to come back after initial treatment.

Such a test cannot tell for certain if any particular patient will have a recurrence but it can be helpful – along with other factors – deciding whether additional or combinatorial treatment might be useful.

Further molecular information can also help to decide whether a patient needs another or alternative treatment if the biology of the primary/recurrent tumour or metastasis changes after a while.

Precise diagnosis is the key to successful treatment.
