The Roche Children’s Walk is a sponsored walk of Roche employees. Every year ten thousands of employees at over 100 Roche sites around the world participate, to collect donations for children in need. Since 2003, over 115’000 walking employees have made the Roche Children’s Walk a continuous success.
What?
The Roche Children’s Walk supports schools and orphan centers in Malawi, for children aged 3 to 19. The projects are operated by UNICEF and ECPP.
The projects have three common objectives:
Providing assistance, security and a meal
Supporting academic learning
Educating and developing skills to help children become self-sufficient.
Local affiliates can use up to 50% of the raised donations for local children projects.
Why?
Roche has a long tradition of corporate social responsibility. Malawi is one of the least developed countries in the world. Almost half the population is younger than 15 years old and half a million children have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDS. 40% of the population live on less than US$ 1 per day. But Malawi is a peaceful and stable country. One of the key ingredients for development is education. This is why Roche has decided to focus on long-term education projects: because they have the potential to truly make a difference.
Dedicated for a decade
2013 is the year of the 10th Roche Children’s Walk. This is not only an important milestone for the Roche employees, but a sign of our sincere commitment and dedication to corporate social responsibility. Together, we’ve helped make a huge impact in Malawi, brightening the future for many orphaned children and young adults. However, there is still much more to do. We remain dedicated to build a sustainable future for these children.
Our partners
To ensure a thoroughly responsible and effective use of the donations, Roche is cooperating with two experienced and renowned organizations: UNICEF Switzerland and ECPP (European Coalition of Positive People).
Through these partners, Roche supports two distinct projects:
Running of orphan day centers (supported and overseen by ECPP)
Classroom construction and training teachers for primary schools (supported and overseen by UNICEF).
Funds raised
Since the first Walk in 2003, Roche employees have raised over 9,6 million Swiss francs. Every cent raised in the Roche Children’s Walk goes to the cause. Roche doubles the donations collected by employees. Since Roche also assumes all Walk and funding administrative expenses, no donations are spent on bureaucracy or fundraising costs. External audits ensure that all funds are used to benefit the children.
Impact
Every donation gives children in Malawi prospects for a better future:
50 USD provide one child’s clothing for 1 year
100 USD support 6 young people for 1 school year
500 USD support school boarding for 1 semester
2000 USD furnish 1 class room
5000 USD finance the two year education of a teacher

Save the date
The Roche Children’s Walk takes place annually on the 16th June – the International Day of the African Child.
In 2013, the Roche Children’s Walk will take place on Friday June 14th (as the 16th is a Sunday).
The Roche Children’s Walk 2013 – Dedicated for a Decade
The goal of the Roche Children’s Walk is simple: we want to help Children in Malawi to take their lives into their own hands. Expressing oneself through art is one way of developing your individuality. So we invited some of the children to create colorful handprints. The results are full of joy and beauty. Have a look! And help us to support these children’s future.
The Roche Children’s Walk 2013 – Dedicated for a Decade
Roche is cooperating with two experienced organizations – ECPP and UNICEF–through which we support two clearly defined projects.
Day centers for AIDS orphans in Malawi, as well as scholarship assistance for secondary and post-secondary education, are run by our partner European Coalition of Positive People, ECPP. Funding from the Walk is also provided to UNICEF Switzerland, who support school improvements and teacher training.
Day centers in Malawi
Today, Roche and ECPP support the running of 3 orphan centers, which serve as day centers for over 2000 children.
The centers provide them with basics such as one meal per day, clean water, clothing and basic healthcare. To give the orphans a chance to escape from poverty, they can learn skills such as tin smithing, tailoring or carpentry.
Staying in school
Through ECPP our funds also pay for some of the orphans to attend secondary and post-secondary school.
Building schools
The Roche funding provided to UNICEF Switzerland has supported the construction of 18 classrooms.
It has also helped supply desks, textbooks and other educational material to primary schools.
New teachers college
UNICEF has undertaken a program for the construction of a teacher training college in Malawi. A portion of the Children's Walk funds assists the assessment, planning and installation of this new facility.
The teacher training college will both help address the need for school teachers as well as offer a critical career and future to young people finishing secondary school.
Empowering the centers
New capacities such as the operation of a maize mill can generate income for each of the centers.
Some of the funds support activities that help the centers to become more independent. Examples are the maize mill or welding equipment to train young technicians and produce metal goods. The money earned through these activities is channeled back to the centers to care for and educate the children. Through these activities our support helps empowering the centers to be able to support themselves in the future.
Education of girls
An African proverb says: “If you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman you educate a family”.
In grade one there are 50% boys, 50% girls, in later years, this ends up being closer to 80% boys, 20% girls. This has partially been attributed to a lack of separate toilet facilities, prompting many girls to leave school in their teens, resulting in a high female illiteracy rate. This is why we have helped build separate toilet facilities, which helps girls remain in school through puberty.
Electricity
Electricity has been made available only recently.
In 2011, ECPP has installed electrification and meters at the centers to provide electricity and lighting to the maize mill, the teacher housing and the training buildings.
Drinking water
Clean, fresh drinking water is available to the children at the orphan centers.
This is essential to their basic health. Daily hygiene is taught at the orphan centers. Boreholes drilled through the support of the Children’s Walk provide clean water, reducing the likelihood of water borne diseases.
Daily meals
ECPP ensures that children at the orphan day centers receive a healthy, nutritious meal every day.
Without assistance, children often struggle to meet their basic needs for food and clothing.
Clothing
Funds raised by the Children’s Walk help provide school uniforms to children at the orphan centers.
The uniforms are handmade at the centers by students, utilizing the skills they have learned.
