Priority actions and goals
 

We have seven key priorities to ensure we make the maximum contribution to sustainable development. These are part of a broad work plan that covers our everyday activities.

Embedding sustainability Ensure that contributing to sustainable development is part of our daily work and increases the success of our business

Held our third sustainability workshop with 60 representatives from all relevant corporate and divisional functions. The focus was on sharing knowledge, and reconfirming our relevant sustainability issues and their links to economic success

Prioritised and agreed to focus on six sustainability areas:

  • Innovation capacities
  • Value of Roche products and services
  • Pricing and reimbursement conditions
  • Access to Roche products and services
  • Relationships with stakeholders
  • Being an attractive and responsible employer

Identified key performance indicators (KPIs) for monitoring progress, and had these approved by the Corporate Executive Committee

Included in the Corporate Knights and Innovest list of the global 100 most sustainable companies

Reselected for the Dow Jones STOXX and World Sustainability Indexes and the FTSE4Good Series

Moved from 26th to 12th place in a ranking of the number of SRI funds invested in a company

Ranked as Gold Class in the Sustainability Asset Management Sustainability Yearbook 2008

Access to healthcare Continue to develop innovative medicines and ways to increase access to our products globally (in developed, developing and least developed countries) Filed 14 new marketing applications and received 18 approvals

201,752 patients received free healthcare by taking part in phase I-IV clinical trials globally

Published details of 480 pharmaceutical clinical protocols, 23 diagnostic protocols and 162 trial results on independent website www.roche-trials.com since April 2005

70% of all affected patients living in countries eligible for no-profit Roche HIV/AIDS medicines

86% of all affected patients living in countries eligible for reduced-price Roche HIV/AIDS medicines

Almost 35,000 patients benefiting from patient assistance programmes (US only)

Signed transfer agreements with two additional manufacturers in 2007, in Ethiopia and Zimbabwe, and announced four more agreements in Bangladesh, Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe in early 2008. Total of nine agreements signed to date

Hosted Technology Transfer Initiative Media Tour and Experience Exchange to raise awareness, share best practice and build additional capacity

Signed agreement with Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS initiative to provide sustainable diagnostic solutions for early infant diagnosis in 35 resource-limited countries.

Using our innovative dried blood spot technology, began to develop screening programmes for tuberculosis and resistant strains, and increased access to laboratory tests and HIV/AIDS care for people living in rural areas. These programmes are available in 35 resource-limited countries

Ensuring responsible business practices Strengthen ethical compliance and awareness in all Roche activities

Forty-three alleged compliance failures reported in 2007. Of these, 29 led to corrective action, including the termination of 17 contracts of employment

Risk Management Charter developed and approved by Corporate Executive Committee

Increased accountability across the Group through formalised risk management process

Developed Compliance Officer network across all affiliates e.g. by conducting five regional workshops on behaviour in business

Completed the worldwide rollout of our Code of Conduct e-learning programme, with more than 90% of employees taking part and all new hires systematically included

Ran Behaviour in Business – Finance training for all members of the finance functions at our headquarters, and initiated training at affiliate sites

Ran additional training on our revised standard operating procedures for good marketing practice for pharmaceutical marketing employees

Established a training and compliance team within our pharmaceutical business’s global medical affairs department

Introduced an online ethics training programme for pharmaceutical development employees globally, to enable them to resolve ethical issues that arise during their work.

Thirty concerns raised with our Global Ethics Liaison Office in 2007. All were resolved and none required escalation

100% of animal testing sites now AAALAC accredited

Developed a 3R Awards programme for employees worldwide, to improved animal welfare

Patient safety Provide highly effective medicines whose benefits exceed risks and with minimal adverse drug reactions Expanded patient safety section of website to increase transparency and disclosure

Strengthened Safety Risk Management plan to emphasise safe use of Roche products and maintain positive benefit/risk profile

Held an international conference on biosimiliars in Jakarta, Indonesia. Experts and regulators attended from countries including China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand.

Recalled Viracept in all countries where it is sold in response to reports of a strange odour, to prevent additional exposure

Began to establish registers of patients who took Viracept between March and June 2007 to monitor  exposure

Began a comprehensive quality review covering all manufacturing, quality control and maintenance processes in our supply chain worldwide, for all products (QuaSar)

Retain and attract top talent Establish programmes to retain and attract the best talent for the right job, and foster a performance culture Created 3,800 new jobs

Rolled out our e-recruitment system in Germany and Asia-Pacific. Candidates can now use our careers website to search for jobs globally

Roche named one of the top 20 employers in the healthcare industry by Science magazine, for the fifth year running

Filled 2,100 positions internally and hired 2,200 talented new people using our global e-recruitment system

Re-launched our corporate secondment policy, with three employees beginning secondments in developing countries: Ethiopia, Niger and Togo

15,300 employees in 41 countries – 36% of those eligible – have purchased shares through the Roche Connect programme

145 employees participated in our senior executive development programme, Roche Engage

Successfully reorganised Roche Pharmaceutical’s R&D structure and function

Support community engagement Establish programmes that build on Roche’s tradition relating to sustainable community engagement More than 12,000 employees from 90 countries took part in the annual Global Roche Employee AIDS Walk, raising around 750,000 Swiss francs to support children orphaned by AIDS in Malawi.

Launched pilot workshops of expanded Genetics Education Program for secondary teachers, in partnership with Life Science Learning Center of University of Zurich and Federal Technology Institute

Ran inaugural “Roche Continents - Youth! Arts! Science!”, a week-long seminar for selected European university science and arts students, in partnership with Salzburg Festival

Through UNICEF, supported two primary schools in Malawi via Re&Act, which channels employees’ donations to worthy causes and was officially launched in early 2006

Supported the International Committee of the Red Cross Clean Water Project in sub-Saharan Africa

Corporate Policy on Donations and non-commercial Sponsorship approved by Corporate Executive Committee and introduced into the divisions

Established Community Relations Contact (CRC) network across all affiliates

Safety, health and environmental protection

Implement action plans at all sites to achieve long-term Group goals:

  • Reduce accident and absence rates
  • Reduce environmental impacts
  • Ensure energy efficiency targets
  • Reduce emissions of greenhouse gas and VOC
  • Improve compliance with Roche’s SHE standards
Roche received the first Financial Times/Citi Private Bank Global Environmental Award for best climate strategy and results

Created the new position of Corporate Security Officer. The CSO will coordinate all security activities relating to people, sites and buildings, and aspects of data protection and product counterfeiting.

Launched a new IT-based global SHE risk inventory. This will provide a global overview of Roche’s SHE risks

Launched a new intranet-based best SHE practice database where sites can share details of incidents and good practice

Gave the Responsible Care Network Award to 10  Roche sites for the best energy conservation projects and ideas

Selected 22 winners from 9 countries in our ECOmpetition, which invites employees to suggest ”eco-projects” to improve environmental protection and reduce costs at their facility

Received no significant SHE-related fines, although one severe incident was reported. Nine operators were affected by an explosion, one of them seriously

Sadly, one of our medical representatives died in a road accident while working. This was our first fatality in 7 years
