Our products and services are
our most significant contribution to society. As we see it, our primary responsibility is to remain
an active, forward-looking company developing differentiated solutions for the complex business of healthcare
delivery. This will enable us to create superior value for our employees, for patients and the medical
profession, and for investors and the communities where we do business.
Perhaps
it is inevitable that we view our responsibilities in this way. After all, our business – the discovery,
development and production of innovative solutions to unmet medical needs – is inherently a long-term
undertaking. It requires courage, determination and independent thinking to invest in new products which
typically take up to 12 years to develop. Our distinctive business model is based
on highly
skilled, independent and highly motivated employees; on an open and arms length interaction with the
medical and scientific communities, and on transparent relationships with regulators, customers and
suppliers.
In business: Over the
past few years we have realigned
our operations to focus exclusively on prescription medicines and diagnostics. In both businesses we
are pursuing superior value creation and sustainable growth through innovation. In recent years we have
consistently outperformed the market thanks to pioneering new products and strong brands, creating over
3,600 new jobs in 2005.
Our employees: We offer people challenging, rewarding
careers and also try to provide a healthy work–life balance for our employees. We believe our campuses,
located in culturally vibrant communities and offering many amenities, give us an advantage in recruiting
talented people. This advantage also extends to job performance and retention.
Environment:
We have taken steps to improve our eco-efficiency for many years now. This has had a direct, positive
effect on costs and has also reduced our exposure to risk. Given the many different factors involved,
it is difficult to quantify the overall impact improvements in safety, health and environmental protection
have had on performance, but it is clear that our investment in these areas has paid off.
Philanthropy:
Our support for contemporary music and art is a distinctive part of the Roche corporate culture, and
dates back to our founding family’s involvement in philanthropic projects. We see close parallels between
innovation in the arts, in science and in business, with success in all these areas depending on a willingness
to challenge convention and move in new directions. We believe our involvement in non-mainstream music
and art has a positive overall impact – both on the innovative capability of our scientists and on the
ability of all our employees to create value.
