Roche Center for Medical Genomics

The mission of the Roche Center for Medical Genomics (RCMG) is to apply genetic and genomic knowledge to the understanding of the molecular pathology of major human disease leading to the discovery of new and more effective therapies.

Research at the centre for medical genomics will focus on:

  • Genetics, as a basis for understanding gene functions and the role of genes in disease
  • Bioinformatics and computer-aided biology, for efficient use of new scientific data and findings
  • Functional genomics, as a basis for developing medicines and diagnostic tests that are individually tailored to patients' needs.
Roche founded the Basel Institute for Immunology (BII) – the forerunner of the Center for Medical Genomics – in 1968. Now, some 30 years later, the BII can look back on an exceptionally productive and successful history, marked by a number of pivotal advances in immunology. This is reflected by the Nobel prizes awarded to three members of the Institute and by a long list of scientific publications. With over 500 former members working world-wide in immunological research, the Institute has successfully accomplished its most important task – to advance immunology as a science.
