Every hour of every day, thousands of patients worldwide receive life-saving transfusions
of blood and blood products. Screening for infectious disease agents is a major component of ensuring
blood and plasma safety. This type of screening focuses on detection of infectious agents that may have
eluded detection through routine donor screening processes. The goal, of course, is to keep infected
units of blood out of the supply, and therefore prevent introduction of chronic or potentially life
threatening diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis, or West Nile Virus.
