Infection
Transmission, adherence and penetration of microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi and other) into a so-called host (plant, animal, man), followed by reproduction in the host. An infection is the precondition for the development of an infectious disease and is essentially determined by the infectious properties of the microorganism, such as transmissibility, adherence, ability to penetrate and ability to reproduce. The emergence and course of an infectious disease also depend on the susceptibility or lack of susceptibility of the host and from the defences of the host (immunity). Influenza is the result of a viral infection.
