Protease Inhibitors
Drugs which inhibit virus multiplication by inhibiting a certain enzyme (protease). As a result of this, the virus cannot form all proteins which are necessary for forming its structure. The first protease inhibitors were introduced in 1995 and this produced great changes in the treatment of HIV disease. In particular, the combination of protease inhibitors and reverse transcriptase inhibitors has increased the rate of survival and reduced the number of opportunistic infections.
