Also endodermal sinus tumour. This is a highly malignant tumour. It usually occurs in the ovaries and more rarely elsewhere (posterior abdominal cavity, pelvis, chest, brain, liver). The tumour usually occurs in children or adolescents and rapidly metastasises through the blood and lymph ducts (see metastasis). The tumour produces alpha-fetoprotein, which can be used as a tumour marker to evaluate the clinical course and prognosis of the condition (cf. Tumourantigen).
Therapy: Treatment by operative removal of the tumour, mostly in combination with cytostatics (chemotherapy). The chances of cure are good.
