Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease that affects people of all ages and can have a major impact on quality of life. It is characterised by chronic inflammation (mainly of the joints), pain and fatigue. The exact cause of RA is unknown, and as yet there is no cure. Even when treated, it can result in progressive joint destruction and loss of mobility. RA is thought to affect over 21 million people worldwide.
