Developed Countries
Healthcare needs in wealthy nations are very different from those in developing countries. People are generally healthier and suffer from different types of disease than the diseases found in developing countries, primarily resulting from poverty and poor living conditions. The quality of healthcare and the infrastructure provided in affulent countries is much higher and people are generally well provided for by either public or private healthcare systems.
However, even in countries with advanced healthcare systems, there are still a number of people who cannot afford healthcare or health insurance and fall through the gap. Hence, we have implemented a number of programmes to assist with access.
Patient Access Programmes in the US
In the US there is no universal public health care system and individuals must pay for treatment. As health care can be expensive, most people have health insurance to cover the treatment they need. Many companies provide health insurance for their employees, and there are government insurance programs for people with low incomes. However, a significant number of people are still uninsured. This can be due to multiple reasons, including because their income is not quite low enough to qualify for a government-funded insurance plan, because they cannot afford an individual insurance plan, or because they do not know insurance is available to them.
As part of our commitment to patients, Genentech runs several programs in the US to help with access to our products:
- Genentech Access Solutions
- Genentech Access to Care Foundation
- Avastin Patient Assistance Program
Genentech Access Solutions
Genentech Access Solutions offers a full range of programs and services to help insured patients navigate the complexities of health insurance and identify assistance programs to help patients cover out-of-pocket costs associated with their Genentech medicines. These reimbursement and access programmes can help patients whether they have private insurance or government-funded insurance.
Genentech Access to Care Foundation (GATCF)
GATCF provides Genentech medicines free of charge to qualified patients who do not have health insurance or who have been rendered uninsured due to payer denial and who meet certain financial and medical criteria.
Avastin Patient Assistance Program
The Avastin Patient Assistance program provides an opportunity for physicians and eligible patients1 who are treated for an FDA-approved indication and who reach an annual dosage of 10,000 mg to receive free Avastin from Genentech for the remainder of the 12-month period. This program is open to all patients receiving Avastin regardless of insurance coverage and can be accessed through Genentech Access Solutions.
