Besides safety, security, health and environmental protection SHE management includes responsibilities that may broadly be summarised as product stewardship and legal compliance. SHE Services thus provides support in the following areas:

• Chemical and bio-safety: The safe handling, processing and supply of pharmaceuticals, active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), intermediates, other chemicals and bio-materials is heavily regulated by special legislations, such as REACH or CLP. SHE Services is not only leading the implementation of these requirements in the Roche Group but it also actively participates in the development of future chemicals/bio-materials legislation.
• Safety data sheets: For communicating hazardous properties of chemicals and bio-materials to employees, customers and third parties in general chemical/bio-materials legislation is calling for safety data sheets for all chemicals/bio-materials handled in a site. SHE Services elaborates these documents and makes them available via web
• Transport safety: All transports and those of dangerous goods in particular have to comply with international as well as internal regulations. Through guidelines, controls as well as individual advice SHE Services is helping to achieve this.
• Customs tariff classification: For transboundary transports SHE Services is providing the necessary customs tariff classification code.
• Environmental risk assessments: Environmental risk assessments inform on the impacts of a particular chemical/bio-material on the environment. SHE Services is elaborating these documents for active pharmaceutical ingredients as part of a new drug application (NDA).
• Informatics, data administration: In the framework of SHE management SHE Services is running an IT system specifically designed for these purposes. In addition a library and a document system for hard copies is used for information purposes.
