SHE Goals

According to the principles of a sustainable development Roche is striving for a continuous improvement also in the area of safety, health and environmental protection. This can be achieved by changing behaviour, by adapting equipment to the most recent standards or developing new innovative processes. However, a sustainable effect can only be obtained within a longer time frame.

Roche wants to further promote this trend of continuous improvement in the various areas of SHE and achieve progress where ever it is possible and economically viable.

This is why the following goals have been decided in 2003 to be reached in 2008:

  • reducing energy consumption in TJ/Mio CHF sales by 10%
  • reducing greenhouse gas emissions in t CO2-equivalents/Mio CHF sales by 10%
  • reducing VOC emissions in t/Mio CHF sales by 10%

At the time when the reduction goals for energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions were set up neither energies and emissions for the carfleet and business travelling nor emissions for imported energies were considered. These contributions are thus subtracted from the total as of 2004 when evaluating the achievement of the goals set.

All goals set for 2008 could be reached as demonstrated in the following graphs. Contributions to these achievements came from all parameters considered. In absolute terms VOC and green house gas emissions were reduced, whereas energy consumption was stabilized. Sales figures showed a continous growth over the time period observed thus supporting the reaching of the reduction goals defined in 2003.

In 2005 further reaching goals in additional areas were defined, based on the keyfigures reported that year:

  • reducing the Roche Accident Rate (RAR) by 20% until 2010
  • extension of the energy savings goal, i.e. reducing energy consumption in TJ/employee by 10% until 2010
  • improving the Group ecobalance in Mio environmental impact points/employee by 10% until 2015

The following graphs show the trends towards reaching these goals:

Reducing the RAR as well as the environmental impacts of our operations are well on track. The lowering of energy consumption per employee showed good results in the beginning. However, additional efforts are required now to come down to the figure set as goal for 2010. Measures have been developed in action plans and are about to be implemented.

Greenhouse gas emissions (t CO2 equivalents/Mio CHF sales)
