Bilirubin
Breakdown product of a component of the red blood pigment (haemoglobin). Bilirubin is bound to a carrier in the liver and excreted in the bile into the intestine. In some liver diseases (e.g. acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis), excretion of bilirubin is disturbed and the levels are raised in the blood, in the skin and in the conjunctiva of the eye (see Icterus).
