Diabetic microangiopathy
Disease caused by the narrowing of smaller and terminal arteries (stenosis). Diabetic microangiopathy is a typical late syndrome of type 2 diabetes or type 1 diabetes. The retina (diabetic retinopathy), kidneys (diabetic glomerulosclerosis) and the small peripheral blood vessels are particularly often affected and perfusion problems and necrosis may develop. The exact causes of diabetic microangiopathy remain unclear. The degree of diabetic microangiopathy is generally directly related to the duration and severity of the abnormalities in glucose and fat metabolism. Cf. oculomotor paralysis.
