Hyperinsulinism
1. Increased blood concentration of the hormone insulin as a result of increased insulin production, with the consequence of hypoglycaemia (decreased blood sugar concentration. Hyperinsulinism occurs during cellular proliferation in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas, the site of insulin production, and in patients with insulinoma, a tumour which produces insulin. 2. Insulin resistance with the consequence of hyperglycaemia (increased blood sugar) in patients with type 2 diabetes.
