Osteoblasts
Osteoblasts are cells which form bone. These cells arise from embryonic connective tissue (mesenchyma). They lie close to the bone at the site of bone deposition and produce uncalcified bone ground substance (osteoid), in which they are gradually enclosed. In this way, osteoblasts are transformed into bone cells which are no longer able to divide (osteocytes). Cf. remodelling of bone tissue.
