Respiratory chain
Cellular system which uses various redox systems with many enzymes and which consumes oxygen, producing energy in the form of the molecule ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and heat. The respiratory chain consists of many different steps in series. It is closely connected to the citrate cycle, some of the products of which pass into the respiratory chain. The transfer of reductive equivalents and electrons to oxygen is coupled to energy extraction and the production of carbon dioxide and water.
